Cross-country overcrowding: what could be done?

XC used to have a "busy trains" web page with a traffic light system. It was fairly crude but gave you a rough idea of which services to avoid. They removed it about a year ago, with no replacement.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

    KWVR NEWS AND UPDATES

I'd rather have the 101 as long as I can grab a good seat at the front (or the back)!

Update to National Rail Enquiries disruption page

Yes, and I've just checked that if you de-select "recently cleared" for example, close the website and come back, the setting does at least persist (which is not a given for this website, the unwanted "hotels" checkbox being an example). But overall it's awful. It's so much more difficult to...

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

I guess I should clean the cat fur out of mine... A number of years back just before CPUs got thermal overload protection I had one burst into flame due to the vents being blocked with fur. At least that shouldn't happen now, it should just shut down!

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

I'm very pleased with my Phillips mini-LED TV, no intrusive "Smart" features/ads, great picture and sound. They seem to have a brand that has faded from view a bit, a wonder if it will survive?

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

My Samsung washing machine washer-dryer (and my sister's, which is used very intensively by a large household) are both fine. Although I've heard bad things about their "connected" appliances - mine is a "no apps required" version.

Great Central Railway News and Updates

Funnily enough I was on a train between Blythe Bridge and Uttoxeter a few days ago when we were stopped due to a tree on the line. It was removed and we were back on the move after 25 minutes, with the cut up bits of tree visible by the lineside. So the national network isn't always a slow...

    Wensleydale Railway

Thanks, I found the times on https://www.eastyorkshirebuses.co.uk/ and they do have tracking, there's a service 73 from Northallerton to Bedale via Leeming Bar on the move right now. It makes a big difference having tracking when the service is sparse! Edit: I see there's another tracking site...

What can be done to improve the safety of user worked crossings?

Maybe this is stupid, but if gates are frequently left open, would it not be safer to have an open crossing with no gates, just lights, and then drivers would be more likely to obey the lights and stop rather than focus on the gates being open and think it was safe to proceed?

    Wensleydale Railway

And this is the sort of reason why I avoid infrequent rural bus services if at all possible. Do they at least have tracking? I might want to visit the Wensleydale soon.

    The 'fraud letters' process

Just on this point I understand that by default most email providers/clients etc. block or nullify such tracking to some extent these days. Google for example opens the trackers and other images via its proxy server, so the sender can tell that it was opened and when it was opened, but nothing...

    Class 810 Initial Diagrams

So it's possible after things improving somewhat (with the cooler weather and a number of important services restored today), it could get a whole lot worse again in the next few months?

How busy are EMR peak services?

Actually as the 17:32 is being reintroduced as far as Derby (but not Sheffield), I'd guess that should mean there won't be a huge load on passengers switching to the 17:02. As for later trains, the pricing seems to indicate that the 19:02 is when the demand starts to drop significantly. The...

How busy are EMR peak services?

I think you'll need a manual pass check which will probably delay you. If you're in 1st you'll likely be fine, but in standard and you might end up standing. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the busiest commuting days post-COVID. As per previous post you need to be at the front close to the...

All cross country services suspended 23/08/26

Yes, it should be step-free but it's really not at all hassle free with luggage, multiple lifts** with waiting time, quite long walks down various tunnels involved, serious crowds at time, it's really a pretty nasty experience with heavy luggage, compared to getting on a train at Edinburgh...

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

That's misrepresenting my point entirely, because I did not say that the other 98% should be unable to benefit from the advantages because of that 2%. If I need to make it clearer, my point is that a public service in particular needs to not take away access methods to that service which they...

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

The problem here is that concentrating on the fact that some people use "can't" as an excuse for "don't want to" deflects from the needs of those who genuinely "can't" and is used to steamroller over their objections and exclude them. Let's suppose, just as an example, that everyone could...

TPE Travel Irregularity Notice – Expired Railcard (advice needed)

Report of fire in Totley Tunnel (15/08)

Looks like it's open again, I've just seen freight service 6M18 (Attercliffe Sheffield to Peak Forest RMC Sidings) pass through on Traksy.
