Perhaps they remember the privatised Railtrack whose skimping on maintenance led directly to passenger deaths at Potters Bar and Hatfield, and which ultimately ended in Railtrack's demise?
The NNR is in a more picturesque setting but it's rather short (about 5 miles versus 10 miles for the MNR). The MNR arguably has a bit more going on railway wise with the various level crossings etc. particularly in Dereham. Wymondham, at the other end of the MNR is a nice little town...
Thanks very much for the excellent summary. I've been following this thread for what seems like eternity now and I'd somewhat lost track of how we got here and exactly what was happening!
Playing devil's advocate, you could argue that given the no doubt eye-watering amount of compensation they are paying out for the 810 faults (and the huge expense of having to pay all those engineers overtime travelling up and down the MML try to fix faults on the go), they will have a massive...
Connections at Grantham are pretty good, although it's only once per hour. It nearly always works out and barely takes any longer than the direct trains.
Typically it's the xx33 Newcastle train from Kings Cross to get to Nottingham and the xx38 Norwich train from Nottingham coming back...
Right, the northern end of the train, not the route!
I really can't remember, it was so overcrowded and stressful at Oxford circus and waves of people kept coming onto the platform so I was pretty much forced along the platform to where it was slightly less awful, possibly ended up at the back...
A 3+2 coach 170 (1L13 1351 Liverpool Lime Street to Norwich) came into Sheffield today bound for Nottingham and Norwich, and the PIS was wrong regardless, in the sense that it said the front 3 coaches were for Norwich; whether it meant on arrival or on departure, it was actually the two coach...
Except that the 222 reliability seems to have dropped off a cliff recently, and there's still the question of when the Scotrail contract kicks it. My pssimistic view is that even if the 221s are in passenger service quickly they'll probably just stop things getting even worse rather than restore...
Not sure which bit you mean by "the Northern end", but the bit I used was all in zone 1. As per previous posts, the route was Waterloo to Oxford Circus on the Bakerloo line, then Oxford Circus to Kings Cross St. Pancras on the Victoria line.
Sampled the refurb 1st seats from Derby to Bristol a couple of days ago. They are very disappointing compared to the old seats, far too hard. Having said that, I didn't get any back problems by the end of my journey so I guess the ergonomics are OK.
This is a particular issue for unfamiliar passengers at Sheffield getting an EMR Norwich service and travelling beyond Nottingham. The announcements say to join "the front two coaches" for destinations beyond Nottingham, then the train arrives, passengers join the "front two coaches", and end up...
I think I waited about 6 and 4 minutes for the Bakerloo and Victora services respectively, I don't know if that's much longer than usual. It's also a few minutes longer to the high level EMR platforms partly due to the two escalators nearest the EMR platforms being down only.
But I was also...
You'd think they'd be able to get the "best" units out with this minimal service, but 1B22 0812 Nottingham to St Pancras International was cancelled - "This service was cancelled due to a problem at the depot (MU)."
I'm guessing the 0912 might have been a bit cosy...
Ahh, that takes me back...to last Monday, at Gainsborough Central. :E
And no, I wasn't there specifically for the 1tpd Sheffield-Cleethorpes service and return along that line, I'd already done that; I just fancied a few hours including a short riverside walk in Gainsborough, and the trains...
