Had a lovely experience the other day from a Southern Conductor and Driver on a sunny summer's day.
Redhill to Tonbridge from Platform 1A. Had forgotten that A is the far end of the platform. Also with my mum who cannot run.
All doors except the conductor's were closed. I got there 5 seconds...
The other week I followed an official itinerary involving Thameslink+Underground (contactless) + Avanti (advance purchase) from a south London station to Euston to Glasgow. It was the last Scotland-bound train of the day. Thameslink made me so late that I missed the Avanti. After getting a...
I recently had the fortune/misfortune of using the ECML while the WCML was shut for engineering works. I noticed that my 1hr52 minute nonstop LNER from Kings Cross to York did not reach 125mph until nearly half an hour after leaving Kings Cross, however it was exactly on time at every location...
Hi,
I have a "Specified LNER trains & connecting services" advance purchase ticket from York to Glasgow, changing at Edinburgh. Seats assigned on LNER, seats unassigned on Scotrail.
The York train pulls in to Edinburgh at 2206. The fast Scotrail trains leave at .15 and .45 past the hour. My...
Does anyone know if TOCs have to release Advance purchase tickets when a Strike is cancelled (in this case for the following few Sundays)?
I was planning on visiting a much loved elderly relative, but from the screenshot below I don't think it will happen. Sad the state of train fares in this...
some TOCs such as Avanti require you to enter your full name, post code, email, and phone number, to access wifi.
Given that other train companies just let you press a button to accept their terms and conditions, why the need for such personal information and what do they do with it?
Does anyone have any advice on this? Completely flexible on times and days of travel.
My initial thought was to plan around the Lumo services from Edinburgh to Stevenage, with ScotRail+Thameslink at the ends, but the return fare was £650.99 (joke, but not far off).
By the way, this is for a...
I recently had a delayed journey with one change on the itinerary (1st train delayed). Using the official connection time at the interchange station, I would have been over an hour late.
I managed to catch an earlier 2nd train by running, and was actually only about 55 minutes late. I used my...
Currently on a delayed train to Birmingham (Avanti line problems). Only need to be there 2 hours for a meeting. Luckily can reschedule the meeting to later this afternoon. But this means I will miss my booked return train. What are my rights to get on a later train?
Both my tickets are advance...
I always try and travel by train where possible for environmental reasons, but here's one I'm really struggling with.
Plan is for a weekend away to see friends in Bristol, going on Friday and coming back Sunday or Monday.
All my usual tricks such as splitting tickets, booking far in advance...

Hopefully seeing a better service now on the WCML. About a year ago almost all the TPE services I attempted to travel on were cancelled.
Any news about allowing their...
ok. very nerdy question. but when you have a table of 4 on a pendolino, you get 2 overhead reading spotlights for each pair of seats. are these angled differently so that one projects to the aisle seat, and the other to the window seat?
if so then which one is for the window seat?
I booked an advance single from Glasgow to London last Friday afternoon, and an advance single from London to Glasgow last Sunday evening. The plan was for a weekend in London. The two tickets were purchased in separate bookings.
All Friday trains were cancelled because of the storm, so I...
I have an Advance Open Return Stansted Express ticket from Liverpool St. I want to get to Soho on my return, and can see it's quicker to change onto the Victoria Line at Tottenham Hale.
The ticket rules are clear "you cannot start, break or resume, or end your journey at any intermediate...
I guess this is the Cardiff to Manchester 'Premiere' route.
I have been trying to pull this information out of the timetables using the 1st class marked times, but when checking what actually ran it seems some journeys were made with sprinters!
Does anyone have a list of the times that use Mk...
I often take long WCML trips, and tended to sit in coach U. The wifi signal on both my phone and laptop would vary to the point of becoming unusable, especially around Oxenholme. Recently I've been sitting in coaches A and B, and to my surprise, wifi is now usable pretty much for most of the...
I've noticed that, especially on Fridays and Saturdays more Avanti Glasgow-Euston services are stopping at Crewe, Rugby, Milton Keynes, whereas before they were non-stop WBQ to Euston. This is pushing journey times over 5 hours end-to-end.
Can anyone shed light on why this is?
I'm booked (advance) on a TPE train leaving Manchester at 7.30pm. In the likely event that it is cancelled there is a 7.34pm Avanti and 8.34pm Avanti. All 3 trains go to my destination.
Do I have to take the 7.34pm or could I equally take the 8.34pm?
I consider myself quite adept at getting cheap train tickets, always booking well in advance, and making liberal use of split-ticketing. But the situation with Avanti has gone from difficult to impossible. They've virtually eliminated the split-ticketing tricks, and advances are like needles in...
