This weekend, for the first time, I'm making the complete trip from Tallinn to Vilnius on Elron and LTG Link's coordinated schedule. Basically - my request is: if you've done this trip recently, do you have tips or recommendations for things to look out for along the way? Sadly, I can't stop...

Starting on Monday 7th September, European rail campaigner Jon Worth set out to test the connectivity of different railway systems by travelling from Kemijärvi in northern Finland to Lagos in southern Portugal, supposedly now the longest possible journey by passenger train in Europe. All of this...

Starting in just under an hour at 11.00CET here: https://www.tramem.eu/ Significantly more entertaining than my existing Saturday plans :D

Thought this might be of interest to anyone following the export of ex-JR Hokkaido stock. A couple of YouTube videos have just been published by a Japanese railfan showing the former Japanese KiHa 183 DMUs now in passenger service in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the Kinshasa–Matadi...

Swedish open-access operator Snälltåget is going to offer a one-off northern lights round trip from Malmö in southern Sweden to Narvik in Norway, via Abisko Tourist Station, in November. The train departs from Malmö at 13:15 on Monday, 23rd of November and arrives in Narvik the following day at...

Late last night Turku City Council voted in favour of building a tram system. YLE (public broadcaster) reports (my translation)…

There was a serious fire on a train on Norway's Bergen railway on Tuesday. From photos and videos it appears that at least two carriages, maybe three, have been completely destroyed. Luckily it was a locomotive hauled set and the rest of the train was able to be saved. Source (in Norwegian...

Mods: possibly a continuation of this closed thread. Sveriges Radio (public radio) reports that Talgo has won the competition to deliver 10 locomotives and 51 91 carriages for procured night train traffic between Stockholm and northern Sweden. Quote, translated, from this short report (no...

Another gem from the BBC Archive on YouTube, this time a doc from 1995 and the period when Eurotunnel were operating truck shuttles but still waiting for approvals to start car shuttles. For me, notable for the rare chance to see inside the rather unusual single passenger carriages that carry...

The BBC Archive YouTube channel has found another fascinating film in the stacks. Filmed in the years after the Beeching Plan, Terence Carroll’s documentary records the final two days of the 26 mile line between King's Lynn and East Dereham. It was first broadcast as Gone Tomorrow: The End of...

The agreement with Trafikverket (the Swedish Transport Administration) ends on 31st August 2026, and SJ chooses not to continue operating the train. Note, however, that the next general election in Sweden will be in September 2026, so renewing or extending the procurement may become a bullet...

Hi everyone. I'm a bit embarrassed to need to ask this, since I used to live in Belfast and knew a lot more about the trains back then. However, it seems that there is quite a sharp difference in the booking horizon for one-way trips on the Enterprise depending on whether you are going...

GoCollective, formerly Arriva, has been notified its contract to operate trains in Denmark has been terminated due to poor performance. The routes will be handed back to DSB. DR (public TV/radio) reports here - my translation of the highlights: GoCollective issued a response here, which...

Continuing the discussion here and here, Sveriges Radio reports today that Trafikverket (the Swedish Transportation Agency) received no eligible bids for the new “Norrland” night train rolling stock. The procurement has been cancelled. I’ll post other news links that can be more easily...

Cross-posting from the Swedish-language railway news site järnvägar.nu (which is easily translated with Google Chrome or other browsers)... but it seems that Trafikverket, the Swedish Transportation Agency has a problem. The deadline to submit tenders to take over the Norrland night trains...

Season 14 of the popular web series Jet Lag The Game has just premiered on Nebula and will be on YouTube next week. In it, Sam Ben and Adam attempt to play Nokia-style snake across South Korea’s rail network, making the longest unbroken line before being blocked or crashing out. You can wait...

I'm in Denmark later this week, planning some movements around the Copenhagen region on Thursday, which is a public holiday. I'm seeing some "Orange" special price tickets - are these likely to be available on the day (since it's a holiday, without many commuters) or do they require advance...

Järnvägar.nu reports (in Swedish) that SJ has decided to extend the cancellation of all direct trains Stockholm - Copenhagen until the next timetable change in December 2025. The cause is the limited number of available units and the decision to prioritise them on Stockholm - Malmö and...

DSB, Danish State Railways, have applied to Jernbanenævnet, the Danish Railway authority, to operate a new direct passenger service between Copenhagen and Oslo. PDF copy of the application: https://www.jernbanenaevnet.dk/Media/638645887011839529/Anmeldelse af planlagt ny passagerrute - med...
