    Reporting problems

As a non-professional (layman) how should I report things like possible faults to NR? I'm probably a hairs breadth more informed than most people (I know I don't the ELR or the mileage I'm at, for example, and that it would be better if I did know, and included it) but not really very much...

Who to call at a crash?

Strange question, but who should you call if you see a train crash? Assuming you have a decent idea where you are but not a description the railway would understand nor the number for the signaller? Presumably you call 999, but which service do you ask for?

    Funding disparity

The IPPR have just been on You and Yours on Radio 4 talking about a report saying that over £2,500 is spent per person per year on rail in London and the south east, and only £5 in the North East. What does everyone think? How much more should be spent on London than other regions? Are the...

    Spare stock?

Once upon a time I think I knew this, but is there much spare passenger stock available or coming spare soon? If so what is it? Also, is there anything that could be converted to a TPO, if Royal Mail decided that burning huge amounts of jet fuel to push letters through the air while not...

    Departure from KX

Does anyone know which platform the 13:30, 14:00 and 14:35 East Coast services calling at Doncaster normally leave from? I happened across my northbound train waiting o the platform last time and EC staff were very niuce about me boarding. I've not got a reservation this time because the man...

    Holding trains

What is the practice with regards to holding trains with broken toilets? I was travelling with someone recently who had a very large cup of tea and then discovered the train had no toilets. We got off at the next stop (they were in actual pain) and I went to the front to ask the driver if he...

    Fcc

In 3 minutes on the National Rail Enquiries website I've come across three interesting things about FCC services on the Thameslink route. 1. An on-peak fare seems to be 10 quid. Have fares gone down or is the site broken? 2. They seem to have a discount card for some students ( First...

    Season

This is quite a strange question, but would a first class season from Bedford to 1-6 allow first class throughout zones 1-6, or is it just a first class season between london terminals and bedford with a travelcard? For that matter, is it restricted to trains? If it is, do they lift...

    Training

Two questions: 1) How much training is involved in each of the jobs (ticketing staff, platform work, guard, RPI etc.)? 2) Where do track maintenance personnel come from? I mean do they start out as a raw recruits, take the PTS course and learn by doing, or is there a central college that...

    Season ticket availability

Well I made a fool of myself. Please ignore this.

    Sudbury

Does anyone know what happened at the Sudbury crash? Some reports say the gate is locked or imply that the signaller controls the gate. I assume it is a Pacer. Does anyone know?

    Break of journey

Is a single from SAC (St Albans City) to STP (St Pancras Domestic) valid for a break of journey at Kentish Town? I know it's a stupid question, and I probably knew the answer a few months ago, but a relative had got a very hectic and stressful travelling schedule and I want to get it right.

    New lights

Does anyone know why there are new lights over the buffers at the dead end track at St Albans City? There are two lights one over the other, white, yellow or orange, mounted on the buffers.

    Strange Lights

I saw some strange lights this evening in the four foot of two of the four tracks on the MML. The tracks were next to each other on one side (the up slow and down slow I think). They were two lights or pairs of lights. A train ran on the furthest of the tracks, and didn't sound it's horn...

    Improvement timetable

Could any infrastructure people here help out someone who takes a not very well informed interest in civil engineering and service improvement? I want to know how much disruption is involved in, and how long it takes, to qaudruple a line? How much of a possession is lost setting up and...

    Class 222 headlights

Strange question but are Class 222 headlights meant to be symmetrical? I ask because a couple of times recently I have been walking over a pedestrian bridge over the MML and have seen an EMT class 222 with one of it two main headlights off. I think the side lights were lit on both sides...

    Probably a silly guestion

If a season ticket is shown by FCC as being from (say) Welwyn North to 'R1256' is it only valid in zones 1,2,5 and 6, or is it just shorthand for zones 1 to 6?
