Station names that have an amusing Spoonerism

When my nephew travelled with me to various football stadia, he’d often do a deliberate Spoonerism on station names. Some were phonetically amusing, if not spelt the same. One on the Thameslink network made me chuckle, He still refers to South Merton as “Mouth Certain” to this day :D Anyone...

Brighton mainline this weekend, 21/22 March

Thameslink say they are running rail replacement services between Brighton and Three Bridges, but the journey planners only show me the journeys via Littlehampton and the Arun Valley?? Anyone know how to get the bus info, please?

Green Park station: old Jubilee Line platforms in use this weekend?

TfL’s regular email about weekend engineering works states “No service between Green Park and Stratford, including Saturday Night Tube” this weekend (10th/11th January 2026) Is it possible that trains arriving from Stanmore will be turned in the platforms that are normally closed to the...

Delay Repay when train is cancelled short of destination

As per the title, my train at my point of origin was not cancelled, but after Gatwick it terminated at Three Bridges, well short of Brighton. Will it be rejected if I select ‘Cancelled’ as the reason for claiming Delay Repay? I don’t see an option ‘terminated short of destination’

<joke> New High Speed line from London Victoria to East Croydon ?

Major disruption on Thameslink today, but good to see Gatwick Express running the 20:29 with a journey time to East Croydon of 1 minute !!! (screenshot shows departure from London Victoria at 20:29, first stop ÉCR at 20:30)

What is happening with the Royal Mail 325s left at PRDC?

Moderator Note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/royal-mail-to-cease-using-trains.270595/ That would indicate some shuffling around of the individual units, via the reception sidings, has taken place. A couple of weeks ago, 325005 was the only unit in Platform 2 that would have...

Boundary zone 6 to Dartford tickets

As above, how can I purchase a return from the Zone 6 boundary to Dartford? Are these only available from TVMs? I tried entering ‘Boundary Zone 6’ on Southern’s website but it doesn’t recognise it. I looked at the price of a return from Brighton to Dartford and it’s actually quite a bit cheaper...

London to Brighton via Horsham this Sunday, January 12th

I’ve just discovered that there are no direct trains to Brighton on the Brighton Main Line this Sunday, due to engineering works between East Croydon and Gatwick Airport. Journey planners are suggesting a train to East Grinstead, Rail Replacement Bus to Gatwick, then train from there to...

<trivia> Watford is now on the Midland Main Line !

    1984 Brighton Mainline resignalling

My nephew was delighted when looking out the window on a trip from Gatwick to East Croydon, as we passed over the slow lines and a train ‘tunnelled underneath us’. Looking on Google, I saw reference to how the fast and slow lines were ‘swapped’ in the Eighties. So I assume the ‘Quarry Line’...

    The Hatfield Rail Crash aftermath

As per the title, I was talking to my other half about the tragic events of October 2000, after she was told by a University student of the tragedy. Am I right in thinking that the southern end of the ECML was shut for some weeks afterwards, for major track replacement? I’m sure I had to get...

‘Please mind the gap between the train and the platform’

Travelling on trains on the suburban lines out of King’s Cross last night and this morning, I have heard announcements about being aware of the step down from the train to the platform. Is this a national thing, in response to publicity about accidents at Ealing Broadway, where there is a big...

    (more) antisocial behaviour on trains

Maybe I’m overreacting, but in the declassified first class on a Thameslink service today, all was calm and quiet, around 20 of us sitting quietly, some using laptops or reading the news on phones or newspapers. One person has frequent notifications pinging, with the volume up full blast...

    <trivia> Funny announcements on trains

As someone who normally filters out the repetitive on-board automated announcements, I always listen attentively when there’s a manual one. I won’t identify the route or service (as no sense-of-humour bosses might discipline the driver), but this one caused a lot of chuckles on arrival into our...

Brighton main line flooding, 6 May 2024

So last night, I saw trains being terminated at Gatwick Airport or Three Bridges, and passengers advised to travel via Barnham. There were no trains to either Brighton or Lewes on the route via Haywards Heath due to flooding. Obviously, with no trains due to strike action, it’s not possible to...

    Lost gold card

As per the thread title, I believe my ticket wallet fell out of my pocket when travelling on the tube today. It contained the return half of my train ticket, my Oyster card and a Pevensey Bay to Pevensey & Westham season ticket (the cheapest Gold Card on the network). I can replace the Oyster...

Direct trains from Watford Junction to Stratford 14/1/2024

Interesting to note that, due to engineering works at two locations, London Overground are running the Watford DC lines trains via Willesden Junction platforms 1 & 3 through Kensal Green Junction, and onwards to Stratford this Sunday. There are no LO services between Willesden and Euston, or...

    Failure to lower pantograph

Was just on a London Overground train from Willesden Junction to Clapham Junction when there was a loud bang near Shepherds Bush. After a long delay, we proceeded slowly into SPB, where the reason for the bang became obvious, as per the attached photo. How can this happen? I thought these units...

Varamis Rail - contract with Royal Mail ?

Does anyone know anything about this company, Varamis Rail? It seems they will be running a parcels train into and out of Royal Mail’s distribution centre in Willesden as of 2 January 2024 ? I know RM have a rail-connected super hub in the Midlands, but it’s certainly not adjacent to Birmingham...
