Southampton - london Waterloo, monthly travelcard with london underground zones 1-6

I don’t think there’s any real scope for a flexi season, when the normal 7 day season on this flow costs so much less than 2 anytime returns. The typical season discounts on shorter routes, and nearer London, are completely different to this and that’s what makes a flexi an option.

    Northumberland place names and pronunciations

I was born in Alnwick, 3 of my grandparents were Alnwick born, then I grew up and was schooled in Gosforth then Newcastle, but have lived in Hampshire for 50 years now. My mother actively discouraged the more extreme aspects of the Geordie accent though, that I’d pick up at school. My wife...

What prevents a better and more frequent service running between Birmingham, Sheffield and Leeds?

SW/Birmingham to Leeds and Northeast/Scotland hourly, and Reading/Birmingham to York/Newcastle (alternating) “almost hourly” are both supposed to return from May 2025, at least that’s according to their track access application, as pointed out in a few similar previous threads. I‘ve really no...

formal warning for using a photo Oyster card

I think the first and only post @ashk07 made before yesterday was a comment in a thread about a similar problem, but his own problem was never explicitly stated: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/caught-using-husbands-photocard-on-elizabeth-line-worried-about-consequences.266341/#post-6989294

Should Northumberland Park (Tyne & Wear) be renamed to avoid confusion?

It’s been discussed in the main Northumberland Line thread before, (in post #737 and onwards back in January this year), if there’d ever been a real problem wouldn’t it have been when the metro station was named?

    Northumberland Line reopening: progress updates

Well spotted, I missed that one.

    Northumberland Line reopening: progress updates

One odd thing I noticed, (after earlier posters mentioned maps and stuff), is that if you search round the local roads on Streetview there are no signs actually showing “Bebside”, neither direction signs at junctions or at the roundabout, and I also couldn’t find the normal sort of roadside...

Pragmatic Changes to XC post EW

In addition to points already made, DFT explicitly ruled out capacity for ‘cross country’ style services from the south via EWR. It’s been discussed a few times in the various EWR threads. As an infrequent user of the XC Manchester service from the south coast, I see it primarily as my...

Trivia: Downsized stations that are shells of their former selves?

Manors. 9 covered platforms, 4 on the mainline and 5 for the Blyth and Tyne route via Gosforth. Reduced to one short island platform that’s not exactly easy to find…

    Northumberland Line reopening: progress updates

“Bebside for Blyth” might have been an appropriate way of naming it.

Cross Country treating customers as sardines

12 x 221s from Avanti west coast are arriving with XC, as discussed in dozens of other threads. Anything else, such as bi-mode IEPs, is all but impossible.

East-West Rail (EWR): Consultation updates [not speculation]

My understanding is that there were 3 possibilities: 1. All new road and foot bridges were designed and built for the required freight gauge# and future wiring. Of the original bridges: 2. Any that already allowed for the freight gauge were not significantly altered, although some parapets...

    East Midlands Parkway - Failure?

It was definitely not built as an airport station, that was mentioned somewhere in the original planning application. AIUI the primary purpose was to be a park and ride station to draw in people from the wider area who were travelling to London down the M1, and secondly to act as a park and ride...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Post #6866 is interesting on this subject, the quote tells us that Market Harborough to Wigston was an advanced part of a much larger tender. You’re quite right that it’s all a bit ‘under the radar’, and there’s a lot going on that’s been covered in this thread at the time it became known, but...

How frequent is the vagrancy act enforced within London rail services (NR+TFL)?

“Unsuspecting” officers! Did you mean undercover? A “homeless man”, how can you ever really know or tell?

Crossrail/Elizabeth Line Concession Awarded to GTS Rail Operations

That’s a TfL decision already made, there’s no obvious reason it would affect the choice of concession operator.

    Paper Tube Maps - Discontinued?

Isn’t that something for the anachronisms thread? Do people ever do that nowadays?

Cross Country treating customers as sardines

They aren’t really going 100%. Their latest track access application has been discussed in a number of threads, and it does not include a number of the 2019 features. There are no extensions from/to Guildford or Bath, none of the Reading services extend to/from Southampton, I believe certain...

Cross Country treating customers as sardines

It’s been noted in a number of previous similar threads that they’re getting more than enough units to replace the HST’s. The original 7 was increased to 12.

    New-style Paper Tickets

Yes, I probably should have said they can’t scan them to check their history.
