TRIVIA: What is the furthest you can travel all the way by train from London?

Baku-Tbilissi-Kars railway project : seriously delayed, but now nearing completion. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baku–Tbilisi–Kars_railway I'm basically waiting for passenger trains to appear on this line in order to start with my next rail travel project : circling around the black sea...

TRIVIA: What is the furthest you can travel all the way by train from London?

I have seen on some forum a few years ago that the grand plan of Turkish railways to replace the Van lake ferry crossing was to build a line from Kars to Natchichevan. I suppose that it implies to modify the gauge of the line from there to Jolfa in order to have standard gauge all the way...

    Flanders trip in January

Tervuren station because till 1960 or so, there was a train line coming from Brussels Luxembourg that terminated there. There is still a foothpath that you can take from there, that will bring you back to the terminus of line 39. The old line right of way is then re used by tram 39 till place...

TRIVIA: What is the furthest you can travel all the way by train from London?

Are you sure that the train from Tabriz to Nachichevan still operates ? I saw it on the iranian railways web site a few years ago and then it disappeared. Is it back, or have you been there recently ? There are passenger trains crossing Turkmen borders, mainly from Moscow to various cities in...

TRIVIA: What is the furthest you can travel all the way by train from London?

There once was a Moscow - Tehran direct train, via Sochi, Tbilissi, and Erevan. But its route is today severed in multiple places : - In Abkhasia (separatist region of Georgia) the line is cut south of Sokhumi to the Georgian border ; - And then it is cut again at the north border of...

TRIVIA: What is the furthest you can travel all the way by train from London?

You can go to Iran from Turkey. Seat61 says that a cross border service between Van and Tabriz has recently been restarted. There are no passenger trains available to cross any Turkmen border, so you would need at least two short bus or taxi trips. The train Moscow Dushambe still crosses...

TRIVIA: The longest journey that you can do on one train

But apparently not allowed for foreigners who can only go to North Korea by train via China.

TRIVIA: What is the furthest you can travel all the way by train from London?

You don't need to go through Turkmenistan to go to Dhaka. You even can't. The right way is through the Zahedan (Iran) - Quetta (Pakistan) border crossing, presumably still served by two trains per month.

    Railways In Jordan

Been there in 2017 and here is what I saw. Freight operational between the phosphates mines and Aqaba, partially on the old hedjaz alignment, partially on a new trackbed. No passenger trains. Open air museum in the Wadi Rum station. One freight return trip per day. North of Amman, track still...

    Flanders trip in January

For me the section to De Panne is prettier than to Knokke. But indeed, to come back, it's a bit more complicated, but not that much : in De Panne, take a train to Ghent (hourly) and change in Lichtervelde for a train to Brugge (also hourly, immédiate connection). It will give you an idea of how...

    Cologne rail-related items of interest

There is a foot & cycle path along the 6 tracks of the bridge over the Rhine river. Cross it and stand for half an hour during peak time, watching the parade of trains pass by... Otherwise the light rail line from Koln to Bonn (45 km) might also interest you.

    Aachen

Visited it with a belgian train driver who took me in the driving cabin for a trip Brussels Aachen and back (the Train was going to Cologne but a german train driver took over as of Aachen). HLE 18 to go, HLE 16 to come back. Will never...

Most languages used on a railway service?

Yes there have been several complaints in the past about the strict observance of linguistic laws on international trains, and finally, good old common sense prevailed, so now all announcements on those trains are quadri lingual.

I looked at the belgian diagrams posted on the site mentioned above and many parts seem seriously outdated too, some by several years.

If you're interested in ex-CIS countries, this page (and the whole site) is a mine of information : https://www.parovoz.com/maps/supermap/supermap-small.png It's the map I used to prepare my trip to Uzbekistan. Not updated any more either I think, but still very interesting.
