how the uk would be prepared to live if a vaccine couldnt be found

I think, and I know @yorkie will agree with me, that most teachers will be delighted to get back to work unless they or their partners have some underlying condition. It’s all very well setting work from home, rewriting course units and so on but I really miss working with real, actual students...

First West of England (Bristol, Bath & The West)

I found out today that the only reliable way of finding First Bus times in the area is their app (and probably the website). Just Googling something like ‘X5 Portishead’ brings up an old timetable, and when I got to Portishead, the bus shelter electronic display was just wrong. However, the X5...

    GP's and COVID

I’ve been told I can’t change doctor from one in Doncaster to one in Sheffield ‘until it’s all sorted out’. Apologies, just realised this is totally OT. Perhaps a new thread needs making: Your experiences with doctors during the CV situation.

can public transport ever recover from COVID-19

Full and some standing on the 1221 Doncaster to Sheffield today. Of course on this line XC have mostly withdrawn their hourly service and Northern have reduced the stopper from half-hourly to hourly.

    Trivia: Stations named after buildings.

I think we could be getting a bit dodgy with one or two of these. If there is a building in Falmouth called The Dell, I bow to your superior knowledge. Surely Kempton Park and Port Sunlight are settlements after which the stations are named; possibly the same with Lympstone Commando, which is...

    Worst UK train?

Agreed. I can/could normally tolerate Pacers, but the e-Pacer 144 012 was a nightmare: leaks, cracks and stains in the ceiling, rock-hard seats. Hopefully Booth’s are ready with the angle-grinder.

    UK face coverings discussion

No, I absolutely agree with you: but if it makes life easier then carrying a card or wearing a lanyard gives people enough confidence to go out rather than stay in, then they should do that.

    UK face coverings discussion

I hope this is not stopping you from going into shops or going on public transport. If you have enough confidence, all you should need to do if challenged is say “I am exempt”. But otherwise you could just print yourself a card saying “I have autism/Aspergers/a medical condition so I can’t wear...

    UK face coverings discussion

I don’t think people are trying to justify that you might be assaulted if you tell people to wear their masks properly etc. I think they are just warning you of a possible consequence. If you read the rest of the thread, you will find some posters who think the use of the masks is a good idea...

    UK face coverings discussion

Thank goodness society these days realises that autism takes many forms. A significant minority of autistic people have a heightened reaction to one or more senses. Touch is one of them and, some autistic people will not be able to bear the feel of the mask around their face or over their ears.

TRIVIA: most different TOCs on consecutive services from one station to another

Yes, that really seems unbeatable. The only other place I could think goes near it, apart from the Wolverhampton quoted above could be Edinburgh to Haymarket or vv (Scotrail, XC, LNER and TPE) and I doubt you’d find four separate departures like your or the Wolverhampton example.

    Possible 'normal' holiday destinations

Have you thought of Greenland? It’s got virtually no CV cases, so little risk of quarantine on return - that is if they will let you in. https://visitgreenland.com/articles/why-greenland-may-not-be-for-you/ Only £1604 return from London to Nuuk, the capital.

    Quarantine

Well, that is what I did. The rate in Barcelona was about four times as high as it was here, but still small (1 in 10 000 as opposed to 1in 40 000 here). I went out at quiet times and wore my mask in shops. I used my common sense, as advocated by a certain government advisor and the PM.

    Quarantine

Just a note to say my quarantine ends in 1h 45m. I’ve had to go out about five times to go to the shops, usually at about 2100 when it’s quiet and I had to drive to Doncaster today to pick a prescription up. No checks, but they only contact 1 in 5 apparently.

Sheffield Supertram - rail replacement works in 2020

What is quite interesting is that the Tram Replacement Buses are operated by Powell’s even though it’s Stagecoach Supertram.

Your involvement in accidents in different modes of transport?

Walking - banged in calf by a car a slow speed Bike - knocked off at a roundabout at slow speed; rode into a pile of sand in road when drunk student Car - got rear-ended once, no injury Bus - the bus knocked an errant pedestrian over. Never got my T-shirt back that I used to mop up blood on...
