France needs better slow trains, not just fast ones

I didn’t consider SE class 395 services „Intercity“ and E* are not domestic services. 1671517055 Thank you for making this point. Indeed, frequencies even on TGV services are actually not that good compared to most European countries.

France needs better slow trains, not just fast ones

It is actually extremely fast, considering there are no High Speed Lines.

Trivia: Railway lines in other countries with more than four tracks.

In Vienna, between Hauptbahnhof and Meidling six tracks. In reality, there are several tracks more, but those are part of the depot.

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

It is, and even more so if you compare it, say, with the Gotthard base tunnel. The problem is that it is politically unpalatable to reduce existing security arrangements- what if something happens after it is done? In any case, as long as the UK insists on having immigration before boarding a...

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

They still have to prove they can make them work though. The French are quite good at grand plans… I believe that even changing from Nord to Est will discourage many people. What seems to be underestimated here that a large proportion of people using night trains do so because these are fed up...

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

They are. NightJet made a profit before Covid and there is no reason to think they don’t do now, when demand is even stronger. There *is* some public money involved, but it’s only a small proportion since Austria can’t issue PSOs for foreign countries - but then most transport incurs some...

Sleepers trains from London to Europe.

Again and again: if night trains are going to have a future from London, it is going to be via a change at Brussels Midi. That, unfortunately, will exclude good connections to the South of France and Spain (and probably Italy), even though those might be the most successful, because - SNCF...

Vienna to Greece - options in 2022?

I know it’s not relevant for your travel dates, but if anyone else plans the same journey some other time: the Vienna - Rome NJ will divert to Ancona in summer 2023 (due to works on the Bologna - Rome line), so there will be connecting opportunities to the ferries to Greece.

    Edinburgh Tram developments

Seriously, how can a dedicated airport bus with - IIRC - few stops be compared to a tram whose primary purpose is not airport transport from Waverley (if it were, the bus would not run anymore). Honestly, from anywhere outside of Edinburgh this whole topic is more than surreal.

TRIVIA: Examples of mainland European rolling stock that were a step up from their predecessors

It was an Adtranz/Fiat-SIG consortium, later obviously Bombardier/Alstom. As far as I understand, the tilting technology developed by SIG and then bought by Fiat Ferroviaria was later also used for the Class 390.

TRIVIA: Examples of mainland European rolling stock that were a step up from their predecessors

Probably modeled after U-Bahn trains, which - before the advent of walk-through carriages with full-width gangways - usually didn’t have gangways. 1669845824 The Vienna S-Bahn always had gangways between carriages (not between sets, which would be unusual on the continent anyway), but those -...

TRIVIA: Examples of mainland European rolling stock that were a step up from their predecessors

Yes, class 4010. They also had 2+1-seating in their open second class carriage, which was unheard of then and has been ever since.

Does advance booking and the internet age require a different timetable structure?

I don‘t understand your point. How would an „internet-age timetable“ look like?

    Triple Competition in Spain

Nor am I, but if an operator does such a crap job as RENFE is doing, they deserve all the competition they can get. E* seems to be similar; however, it is probably much more difficult to make money there (due to the high costs of channel tunnel and HS1 operations plus border and custom issues)...

Any remaining "D" trains in Germany?

I know it‘s outside the scope of your question, but there are still several D-trains in Austria. They run in longer-distance schedules and timings - outside of the Takt though - and use LHCS (usually RIC-style), but don‘t have first class or catering and therefore are not classified as IC...

Any possible international routes that can be considered even if it is not in the TEE 2.0 concept?

Not going to happen, the seven-car NJ sets will still be swapped around. Unless every leg can fill 11-14 cars year-round, there is no alternative to it if these services are to be run economically. In any case, the problem is not the shunting per se (there is midnight shunting on NJ in Austria...

Any possible international routes that can be considered even if it is not in the TEE 2.0 concept?

I suppose any further order could include shorter „married“ sets, say 1 sleeper, 1 couchette and 1 coach. Should be easily possible on the Siemens Viaggio platform.

Any possible international routes that can be considered even if it is not in the TEE 2.0 concept?

They certainly can, but they need to finance them as well…

Any possible international routes that can be considered even if it is not in the TEE 2.0 concept?

It really depends on how many sets they will order in the end and what they deem cost-effective. Pretty sure that after the Italy services, services to Germany/Switzerland/Netherlands etc will be switched over to the new NJ first when the second series start arriving, and the freed currently...
