    Windermere battery trial

In Austria, fairly succesful trials in regular passenger service with a modified Desiro Mainline („Cityjet“, Class 4746) have been underway with battery use on several non-electrified lines for about a year, on lines such as the Kamptalbahn (length >40 km, charging possibilities at both ends)...

HS2: what signalling system is planned? also is the Handsacre connection no longer going ahead?

I understand what you mean. I am no signalling expert but follow the discussions in Austria, where ETCS2 (without ATO) has been in operation for a number of years on lines that are semi-HS and in mixed use (including freight). ETCS is still not seen as usable at major stations, which of course...

HS2: what signalling system is planned? also is the Handsacre connection no longer going ahead?

No doubt that at the end of the transition period there will be no legal obligation whatsoever for the UK to use ETCS. However, ETCS2 is now widely used for High-Speed lines around Europe, and I think elsewhere too, and once bedded-in is very reliable, so it would not make a lot of sense for the...

    Amsterdam Eurostar

It will take a long time before Amsterdam and Rotterdam alone will be able to fill 900 seats. The priority should be to increase frequency whilst serving Brussels and ideally also Lille, which otherwise might be underserved. A train is not a plane, especially if it has a capacity vastly superior...

Vienna Transport and things to do there

Be careful to validate your 72-Hour-Ticket (and additional ticket) before stepping on board the train at the airport though (if you buy from the machine, you will probably have a choice to have it issued already validated and I think if you buy online, you will have to specify the exact time...

DSB choose Talgo for new passenger coaches from June 2023

The order will have less to do with the speed of the trainset and more with the fact that DB has already ordered Talgo sets and Talgo probably offered a good price to DSB for a follow-on order. That, and buying a fleet that will already have been approved Germany will make cross-border services...

    Curzon Street HS2 Railway Station

I might be in the wrong thread- if so, please delete - and of course I lack insights into HS2. But: Are there specific reasons why there will be no connections between HS2 and classic lines at (near) Curzon Street (and indeed in Leeds; although I am aware that trains could run direct from York...

Vienna Transport and things to do there

A Wochenkarte is indeed even better value than the 72-Hour-ticket but geared towards commuters, hence valid from monday to sunday. Tram nr 1 goes to the Prater. However, for the Ferry Wheel (Riesenrad), Underground 1 or 2 are better options (it is a nice and not very long walk from the terminus...

Vienna Transport and things to do there

I would suggest a 72-Hour-Ticket, which at approx 17 Euros is really good value. It is valid on all public transport within Vienna including rail services (except WESTbahn). However, it is NOT valid from or to the Airport! I would not recommend using CAT. It is not worth the extra cost...

Updated - Sweden: Trafikverket proposes Malmö-Brussels & Stockholm-Hamburg night trains, starting by 2022.8.1

If this service ran to Brussels from the start, it might be a good fit for ÖBB to tender for, since it could interwork with the planned daily Vienna - Brussels (/Amsterdam) service. However, new NightJet coaches would need to be in service first, no spares at the moment.

Updated - Sweden: Trafikverket proposes Malmö-Brussels & Stockholm-Hamburg night trains, starting by 2022.8.1

Such an override is now routine in many parts of Europe, mainly because of tunnel safety, and besides being included in new-builts, has been retrofitted to lots of older stock.

    ICE via Mittenwald

It is not, ICE 1207 runs through to Innsbruck. It is probably for pathing reasons, ICE 1221 runs on Fridays just at a time when regional trains from Innsbruck run half-hourly (the line is single-track). The empty ICE continues to Innsbruck later in the day. These ICE do not exist to serve...

    London to Budapest

The Austrian „Vorteilscard Senior“ is available to anyone over 63 (64 from 2020), costs only € 29, giving a discount of 50% (45% if you buy at a Counter vs online or a ticket machine) and is valid for a year. I am not aware of any residence restrictions and ÖBBs English-language Site does not...
