Disruption to services - Storm Dudley & Storm Eunice

It's not just the wind speed that influences the warning level. There is a high Sping tide due up the Bristol Channel as well. This massively increases the risk for coastal areas, despite theower wind speed than for example Dorset.

China vs Taiwan and other potential invasions/conflicts of concern (previously included Russia & Ukraine)

Isn't it curious that the noisiest and most billigerent Western countries either have a domestically embattled leader (Biden, Johnson, Duda) or have an election coming up this year (Macron)

China vs Taiwan and other potential invasions/conflicts of concern (previously included Russia & Ukraine)

Russia will always fall back on the fact that under international law they can position their troops in whatever numbers they like and whatever posture on what is their territory. They plan to use this as a sword of Damocles hanging over Ukraine to destabilise the government.

China vs Taiwan and other potential invasions/conflicts of concern (previously included Russia & Ukraine)

The reaction of the Western countries is exactly what Putin wants. We are playing right in to his hands. He loves to make us play the guessing game and he is the centre of attention. I don't believe he intends to "invade" Ukraine. That's not how he operates. He'll stir up something in the east...

GWR Class 769 information. (Units no longer with GWR - Off Lease March 23)

But surely the weight of the diesel equipment is only the same as 200 people, who would have been crush loaded in to each carriage in the Thameslink days. They were still pretty nimble then.

    Longest line of sight (UK)

Great view from Pepperbox Hill today near Salisbury, down to Southampton, the Solent and the Isle of Wight.

    Longest line of sight (UK)

There is, I'm told, line of sight from the top of the Chillerton Down transmitter on the IoW to Alderney. This was how they first got 405 line ITV to the Channel Islands.

    Longest line of sight (UK)

It isn't. There us insufficient high ground on the Cherbourg peninsula. However there are reports you can see the beam of light reflected from Gatteville lighthouse. However, there was once a report of a Fata Morgana (superior mirage) whereby the French coast could be seen from the Isle of...

Here's the Viewfinder Panorama map http://www.viewfinderpanoramas.org/panoramas/ENGP/NINE%20BARROW%20DOWN.png The view to the west if very limited by the rest of the Purbeck hills.

    Longest line of sight (UK)

A good spot in the south is Nine Barrow Down in Dorset just above Swanage. You get a view right across the Solent, past Portsmouth in the mid distance to Burton Down in Sussex. That's a good 60-70 miles.

    BBC Three is back

A lot of people forget why there's a TV licence. It's to fund programming that is not commercially viable. That means there will be some stuff broadcast that you have no interest in but still have to pay for. But conversely there will be programmes broadcast of great interest to you, but...

Lines with a strong case for electrification that have no plans to be electrified

The Thames Valley branches (I know Bourne End is troublesome in that respect). Then cascade the 165s somewhere useful.

    BBC Three is back

I hardly watch any linear TV these days. It's all either on catchup or streamed on the Sky Q box. The only time I watch normal TV is for live events.

China vs Taiwan and other potential invasions/conflicts of concern (previously included Russia & Ukraine)

To the media, Russia is the new Covid. Pick up on the worst case scenario, and dress it up as the most likely. Russia could invade Ukraine. But they probably won't. Putin isn't stupid. Those troops are there as a part of his plot to destabilise the Ukrainian government. His modus operandi is...

    UK "Mildwave" on it's way!

Problem is if you cut the grass and then there's a frost that night. Mine is rather long right now, but I'm trying to resist giving it a trim.

    Class 442 Disposals

That's interesting, thanks. I don't know of any similar types of preservation by anyone else, so the plot thickens.

    Class 442 Disposals

The Cab Yard in Bridgend already have the cab of 2405. I wonder if they want 2424 as a source of spares to tart up the one they've already got?

China vs Taiwan and other potential invasions/conflicts of concern (previously included Russia & Ukraine)

I believe there are very few countries that are formally identified with a definite article. The Gambia is one, I think The Bahamas is another. Ukraine certainly isn't.

Class 158/159 recovery following Salisbury collision

For quite a while they were able to spot hire one unit a day to GWR, and allow another one to potter up and down the Lymington branch.
