Should there be more warnings against fare dodging?

Perfectly possible to buy a ticket without an itinerary online, and I suspect the word itinerary is not in any relevant legislation. I doubt anybody outside this forum has ever used the word in c Well yes, you might point that out, in the bizarre manner of someone who wants to be a lawyer but...

Should there be more warnings against fare dodging?

As someone mentioned earlier, this is something which is frequently mentioned on here to an extent it arguably shouldn't be, and results in numerous threads from young and understandably naive and inexperienced people terrified by what they've read on here before they post. There are no careers...

Managing Mersey Rail Crowds This week

I would have guessed so. There's little reason for people to go there at the weekend.

Is the Avanti-run WCML just for wealthy businesspeople now?

Hmm. Consider how the vast majority of Britain's railway lines and stations were originally built.

In general, do railway passengers have a phobia of travelling in the opposite direction to where they intend to travel?

Checked baggage, "guaranteed" connections and a lack of alternatives - you can't drive to North America... Changing trains is a major disincentive to non-distress travel, and it's well documented that new direct routes can tap into suppressed latent demand. The same is true for air travel.

In general, do railway passengers have a phobia of travelling in the opposite direction to where they intend to travel?

You see this everywhere a train reverses. I think I've heard "what, we're going back" every time I've been on a train that does at Chester, for example. Coupled with reversing meaning a longer than usual stop, it's not surprising that it worries people.

Managing Mersey Rail Crowds This week

That isn't what happens in such events. Many many people will have headed to Liverpool city centre, more than who have headed to Paris. I was on a Holyhead to Chester train earlier and it was rammed with people from Ireland in Liverpool shirts to the point people struggled to board. Luggage...

Should TfL take over and rename Thameslink?

That's quite a redefinition of Greater London! Thameslink needs to have many terminuses because otherwise you overload them, and by its nature it has to fit in with the other services on lines outside of the core. Plus try explaining to passengers using it that "Thameslink 2000" can't actually...

    Crossrail interchanges with other lines

I doubt any journey planner knows anything about the exits at any station. They'll just work on the standard interchange time, surely?

Staffing and policing. The latter involves knowing where people are. It's very common for football policing to direct people to certain stations and prevent them from using others.

Would GBR fare differentiation on intercity / regional / local fares follow DB / JR model

It's a terrible idea. We shouldn't be persuading long distance passengers onto slower trains via price, instead provide sufficient capacity on both. And we need to keep in mind for many journeys there is no real concept of "inter-City," and that the passenger really shouldn't have to care what...

Trivia: Examples of avoiding lines used by (in service) passenger trains to bypass a major station...

Are you including through lines without a platform adjacent to other lines which aren't in the centre? For example if I remember correctly Rugby has a southbound one which is sometimes used by Avanti to allow a following service to overtake. 1653748995 XC used to run a single service in each...

LUMO manages Edinburgh to Kings Cross in 3 hr 58 mins!

Of course, but what is being questioned here is *limiting* acceleration. Although if services have to be timetabled to the lowest common denominator there's probably little use for some units behaving differently to others. Other than artificially limiting their ability to make up a little time...

Are some people not cut out to drive?

Occupation comes into it too. I lived in London in my twenties and thirties and I knew lots of people who worked on the railway or were "tradesmen" - builders, plumbers etc. Invariably they drove regardless of their age. Office worker friends were far less likely to drive. I now (again) live...

Why are trains so poorly built and full of so many problems and faults these days?

An awful lot of rose-tinted specs in this thread. The introduction of Siemens units wasn't as perfect as some would have you believe.

Ah. Yes indeed, that would be crazy.

Fantasy Crossrail: Farringdon to King's Cross St Pancras

That is what will be the case when Crossrail 1 fully opens. It's what happens on Thameslink, and we've often been told multiple destinations on a high frequency line are desirable as it means terminuses need not cope with huge numbers of trains and can be simple. Engineering practicality aside...

Rail industry preparing for national strikes

How strange, because I listened to Lynch on the radio today talking publicly about exactly that. I think, sorry know, some people hear what they want to hear.
