    Coronavirus words of the year

How can you forget to lower your hand after you have asked a question. I thought you learnt that in infant school. Are you working with zombies who have stiff joints? :) EDIT: just realised this is an electronic feature. Showing my age!

    Quarantine

Ignoring the overall stupidity of the policy, it is possible they realised that there were a significant number of flights departing on the Saturday, so they wanted to implement the policy without annoying too many people coming back from Italy who might vent their ire on Sky News. This might...

Covid : Infection rates v death rates and a possible second wave

^ Are universities testing everyone then? I was under the impression that the system was under stress a couple of weeks ago and you shouldn’t apply for a test unless you were vulnerable or showed definite symptoms. Yet there have been reports that many students are asymptomatic.

A scam phone calls and emails discussion.

That’s why I said this might not apply if you get work related calls from people you don’t know. But I trust you save them by name afterwards.

A scam phone calls and emails discussion.

I cannot understand why anybody whose job doesn’t need it answers calls whose number they don’t know, let alone ‘caller ID withheld’. If it’s that important they will text, email (yes I know) or send a letter. And the websites like ‘who called me?’ can often point out scammers. I’m writing...

    What is a substantial meal?

NEAR THE END OF THE 19th century, New Yorkers out for a drink partook in one of the more unusual rituals in the annals of hospitality. When they ordered an ale or whisky, the waiter or bartender would bring it out with a sandwich. ‘Ma Bates’ in Doncaster did this in the eighties so you could...

    Platforms with given names?

Cheating, but there was an ‘Alan Bradley tram stop’ at Blackpool where the Coronation St character was killed by a tram - references to Ena Sharples and Blackpool reminded me.

    Really strange PIS pronunciations

It surprised me when I moved to Southampton, which I assumed was pronounced ‘South - ham - pton’ as per BBC. When you got there, the locals said something like ‘Serthamton’. However the BBC pronunciation continued on trains.

    Really strange PIS pronunciations

Damn! I was wrong about somebody telling us about Slaithwaite/‘Slawit’. It might help if posters tell us how they think things should be pronounced compared with the PIS. I lived in Southampton in the late 70s, and Micheldever was always pronounced ‘Mitchell-deever’ over the PA. Perhaps @Bob M...

    Really strange PIS pronunciations

Currently sat on a 195 to Sheffield. The PIS lady pronounced Hope, not rhyming as ‘rope’, but ‘Howp’ (in fact the train is in this station now, and she’s done it again). It has the vowel sound of ‘cow’. This is weird. I can understand perhaps the wrong stresses, but this is way out. I know...

What happened to fare dodgers in the 1920s?

Thank you for a fascinating thread. A lot later than the 20s, in the 60s, the ticket officer at Broadbottom would lock the office a minute before the train arrived and stand at the exit gate collecting the tickets. I suspect this practice was widespread.

Further Restrictions Announced by Johnson (22/09)

Thank you for your quick reply. I think you mean this bit from your link: Central government is understood to be considering stopping people from travelling in and out of the worst-affected areas. If that is so, I won’t be able to get to my work in a college in another local government area...

New Job Support Scheme announced to replace Furlough scheme from 1 November

So if the minimum wage you are on...sorry I don’t know the exact figure... is £9, you should get that anyway, not £6?

Will we see mass protests against authoritarianism and Covid19 restrictions?

I would suggest that we are not natural rioters in Britain - though there have been the odd few - we are natural moaners and delight in complaining about things but not taking action against them.
