Route:Any Permitted fares should allow travel on the fastest service.

My thought on this is that enquiring as to trains for any journey from one place to another, the only offerings (as to train times and tickets) made should be for routes covered by 'any permitted route' (and hence, any suggested trains/route, should be allowed with an 'any permitted route'...

    Changing my email address

Another one I would suggest worthy of a look is gmx.com/co.uk ... or possibly zoho . For the main free providers (at least), you might like to think about grabbing Motco@~ (or whatever) wherever you can - so you'll have it if required.

What additional measures can be put in place to reduce bridge strikes?

I do wonder if - following a bridge strike - railway control should be on to the police/highway authority, to say that as the bridge cannot be guaranteed safe, that road traffic under it - like rail traffic over it - should be suspended until, and to facilitate, bridge inspection. Might...

    Re-use / overlapping of headcodes

I found at www.barrowmoremrg.co.uk/BRBDocuments/BRB_4_Position_Train_indicators2.pdf an LMR publication explaining the Four Position Train Identification system on its introduction in 1961. Class B (or 2) and local ECS workings had route numbers for 3rd and 4th positions; freight trips had trip...

    GCR Bridge Project

Thanks - I don't doubt, and this is all what I would expect. But ... this is something that should be on a high profile web page - linked to and from the GCR, Unification, EMRT and NHR web sites - not a forum post. And like fgwrich I like forward to seeing it. But it really needs a greate...

    GCR Bridge Project

Thanks for providing the historical summary - which goes a long way to explain where we are. But I'm not sure it makes up for the impression I gained yesterday - from the gcrailway and gcrn websites - that the GC Railway's Reunification Project is raising and spending millions linking to...

    GCR Bridge Project

Yesterday I was looking at the Great Central Railway website (all about the Loughborough-Leicester line) - which has much about the Reunification project - but reunify with what? All it says is a 'line from Ruddington to Loughborough' and 'another heritage operation'... with - in an obscure part...

Longest (historic) Tram/ Light Rail services and Shortest (current) Tram/ Light Rail services - anything excluding London Underground

For details of traditional British tramway networks, track down a copy of 'Great British Tramway Networks' by W H Bett & J C Gillham. One issue theough is understanding where systems met and there was through running - or it was a case of all change. And for the largest networks, there were...

Milepost markers - from where are they measured

The NLR eastern section - east from Dalston to Victoria Park (for junction with GER from Stratford) and on to Bow and Poplar is a section which seems to have been totally remiled and redesignated. My assumption is it used to be measured from Broad Street (0m for the NLR) round from Dalston Jn...

Milepost markers - from where are they measured

Great Western 'Main Line' mileage was a continuous sequence from Paddington to Millbay, whence odd things happened to break the continuity - the section from Millbay back to Cornwall Junction was double counted... (Cornwall Jcn was 246m26ch from the east, 247m22ch to the west, with Millbay at...

Milepost markers - from where are they measured

The other issue that occurs is that part of one company's line would be via joint ownership or running powers - with the progressive mileage being interrupted by the other company's (so on the SER route to Reading, while all the SER sections were measured from Charing Cross, other sections were...

Trivia: Railway stations that are only served by a foreign train company?

Going back - before state ownership of railways became more or less universal, there were quite few cases where a railway from one country crossed the border - or what became the border - and 'nationalistion' or border changes didn't always mean that change in railway ownership and frontiers...

What, in rule book terms, is a "vehicle"?

While it might be thought a circular argument, I would consider a vehicle to something which has - or might have - a vehicle number (UIC 12 digit or other) or code. Normally this is as GCclass B1 says: .. and as he says for articulated combinations, it gets complicated: some are formed of...

Unplanned bit of track-bashing (passengers overcarried on Empty Coaching Stock working)

My understanding - from the OP - is that the information screen was actually displaying information about the next train ('to Hitchin') and not the train actually at the platform ('Do not board'), i.e. it was displaying correct information about the wrong train. What PIS systems shoould be...

DSG in the old Thomas Cook Timetable

The Wagon-Lits company used to run sleeping and restaurant cars for - I think - all European railways until, during WW1 the central powers - Germany and Austria-Hungary - decided that, rather than using the services of the enemy owned CIWL, the would have their own company, Mitropa...

"Real steam" by one definition, about to vanish from the world

I would suggest - on a certain definition of 'real' - when the TRPS took over, and the purpose of the of the railway changed from 'providing transport' to 'running (vintage) trains' (even if they did 'provide transport'). Or should the turning point be when it ceases to 'provide transport'? -...

"Real steam" by one definition, about to vanish from the world

Quite. One of my nominees for a remaining 'real steam' operation is the Snowdon Mountain Railway - where steam locos are doing what they have always done - take tourists up the mountain - because they haven't yet been replaced by diesels. There is a distinction to be drawn between tourists...

Heysham branch - has it ever had other stations?

According to Quick's Chronology, Middleton Road (alias Middleton Road Bridge) was opened 1904-07-11 (with the line) (note in Quick 'not even in company tt'), closed 1905-06. As he is reckoned as the authority, I would regard any subsequent reopening very doubtful. It was a Midland Railway...

Are there any geographically accurate rail & tube map with fare zones available?

There are also also a set of - now rather ageing - Underground line maps overprinted on OS maps, at https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/237160/response/587633/attach/3/UndergroundMaps.pdf, see https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/lul_route_maps#outgoing-402314

Last WMR/LNR Train to London Cancelled - forced to use Avanti Service

Doesn't always work... It depend how much passengers getting on the right train matters. If it matters a lot - as it does for planes - then yes, it's needed. Either you manage the passengers to ensure they get on the right train, or accept that some will self-manage on to the wrong one...
