Guardian article: SWR leaves passengers stranded

Having done a bit more looking around - at the Charlwoodhouse website (see earlier post) for train running info , and at https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/uk/yeovil/historic?month=10&year=2021 for what the weather was: the weather wasn't actually that bad: 'stormy' would seem to be something...

Guardian article: SWR leaves passengers stranded

Looking at the Charlwoodhouse web page linked above, AIUI the last train through to Exeter was 1L29, 1120 ex WLO, 1340 at Yeovil; the next (1L33 - 1220 ex WLO) terminated Yeovil c1440. So the reported incident (affecting the 1820 ex WLO) was not an 'unexpected' termination: I assume it was...

How might car registration plates be numbered after the year 2100?

That's what's due to happen in 2050... Wondering if mark OOOOOOO (or do I mean 0000000) will be issued then...

Should passengers have spare money and/or travel insurance rather than expect the railway to help in disruption?

In the absence of better alternatives - trains to get me to destination, or provided accomodation - I would regard kipping in the station as an acceptable (however undesirable it might be) option, so, if it came to it, in the situation to be allowed.

    Gradient Measurement

I recall reading somewhere that different countries expressing (railway) gradients in per cent (%) or per mille (‰ (or 0/00), i.e. per thousand) terms did not all calculate them the same way (I think the distinction was between America and Europe, but I forget the details) Yes. Better indicated...

    Locked in at Blackburn Station

My view is that, whatever the final legal decision (by a judge, in court) might be, in the circumstance, I would feel falsely imprisoned, and that would justify me in dialling 999. Wondering whether there are any (and if so, how obvious they are) notices at Blackburn giving an alternative...

SŽ (Czech) electrification : lineside signs

First a ccorrection: SŽ is Slovenian Railways, not Czech (ČD) (nor Slovak - ŽSR) My interpretation (based on what's already been) said: the parallel broken lines indicate that the pantograph must be down, either because there is an interruption in the overhead, or it is necessary to raise a...

    Locked in at Blackburn Station

A few thoughts on this: The previous arrival was only 10-15 minutes earlier. Without knowing details - I assume it would also have had a guard, if not passengers, who would have also been locked in had the station already been locked - that implies that the station had been locked up quickly...

Must staff identify themselves on demand?

My thought: if somebody is not readily identifiable as a member of staff, then they are just a random person; and if not individually identifiable (by name or whatever - that's why Policemen have shoulder numbers), they are just 'the man at the station' (referred to to in many threads, usually...

    Shortest-lived rolling stock

The stock that I am surprised has not been mentioned is the Southern Railway's CW stock, for extension of the ex-LBSCR AC OH electrification to Coulsdon and Wallington: built in 1923/24, electric service inaugurated 1925-04-01, last AC train 1929-09-22 - so less than 4 and half years service...

Fairest way to deal with expired railcards **Not a specific dispute**

I think both Bletchleyite's idea of automatic renewal via direct debit, and Desperate's of much more verification that railcards are valid before tickets are sold have a lot to commend them. Thought following a recent thread: if I buy - and the railway sells me - a ticket while having an...

Was electrification out to Slough ever considered in 1960s/70s?

Up to WW2 there were through services from the GWR over the Metropolitan to the City (with a loco change at Paddington in the electric era)

Was electrification out to Slough ever considered in 1960s/70s?

I think actually the first 'GWR electrification' was the Hammersmith & City, etc, in conjunction with the Met. With regard to the 'West of England' projected electrification, the story I've read was that it was all about to providing the GWR with a consultants' report that they could use to...

Was the Cowden crash due to cost cutting?

My own thought on the Cowden accident is that major cause was that you had the situation where a train could start from a regular stop - Ashhurst Station - accelerate towards line speed, and then encounter a stop signal - OD58, controlling entrance to the single line - without any warning of it...

Fare evasion but they don't live here anymore

My interpretation of the situation is that her 'parent/guardian' is now the local authority (or one of their officers). On the basis that you have explained this, any further correspondence addressed (as I understand it is) to 'Parent/Guardian of Miss X' should just be forwarded to their...

    Daylight saving and railways discussion

What the SS timetable does not actually make clear is that, apart from the times for South Bend, all times are Central Time (CST or CDT according to season). But it used to be even more confusing, as Indiana only made Daylight Saving Time (DST) universal in 2006. It used to be the case hat those...

Sold Incorrect Ticket - Penalty Fare

Dare I suggest that the RPI wasn't - for whatever reason - a genuine RPI. If the OP hasn't received any subsequent communication from SWR (or other railway body), perhaps they should be advised to contact SWR and/or the police, to report that they appear to be the victim of a crime committed...

Iconic Steam Trains on Unusual Services

LNER A3s saw quite extensive service on the ex-GCR mainline London-Manchester once (late 1930s) the LNER had plenty of Pacifics, until the GCR was downgraded and transferred to LMR mid 1950s At one point in the 1950s problems with the Bulleid Pacifics led to the Southern borowing V2s and B1s...

Route:Any Permitted fares should allow travel on the fastest service.

As putting Orpington to Reading, and Hamworthy to Branksome (wihout anything else) into NRE produces the 'questionable' routings (via Chelsfield or Bournemouth) - amongst others - my view is they should be allowed on 'any permitted' ticket. Or not produced.
