    Watford DC line 4th Rail.

The LO units only ever use the 3rd rail, they don’t have other central pick up shoes, so when running over LU tracks it’s only the tube stock that contacts the 4th rail, which is operated at 0 volts to put the third rail at 660 Volts for mainline trains. Exactly the same as on the Wimbledon and...

    Watford DC line 4th Rail.

It would be bonded every so often to the running rails.

Werrington dive under helps cut "21 minutes off the fastest KX to Edinburgh service"

If all the fast services run with the same calls and to the same overall timings, which one do you name? :D

If the return for electric trains is the running rails, is it dangerous to touch them?

There aren‘t separate returns in DC areas. But if there were, they would have to be a very large cross sectional area to deal with the expected current without significant voltage drop. So it makes much more sense to use the rails.

Trivia: railway sections where the line speed is different in opposite directions

There was a similar question raised in May, it did include the point that speeds might well be different in either direction: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/why-is-one-longish-stretch-of-straight-track-different-speeds-on-different-lines.286950/

    New clock unveiled

Oh dear, what about the forum members who claim not to understand the 24 hour clock system? Didn't a thread a few months ago include a request to revert to am and pm in timetables? o_O

If the return for electric trains is the running rails, is it dangerous to touch them?

Nevertheless they are big inductors, and they will be carrying thousands of amps at times. There’s a decent photo in this thread: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/what-is-this-track-equipment.137716/#post-2767097

Great Northern - Northern City Line to TFL?

Well that’s basically what the RAIB report concluded had happened. It states that during initial site ground investigations they had hit the tunnel at 14m depth, and thought it was a manmade feature, but they then discounted it being a tube tunnel because there was nothing on the tube map.

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

The required fault free running distance is specific to individual contracts, it’s possibly unwise to generalise. I’ve seen anywhere between 500 and 5000 miles mentioned in earlier threads about a variety of stock, and it’s often been said that the first units accepted will have to do far more...

What’s the longest dwell time that any UK service has at a station en route?

This thread has come round late this year, the 2023 and 2024 versions were both in June… :D 24 https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/trivia-longest-dwell-time-in-the-middle-of-a-continuous-service.249714/ 23 https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/longest-intermediate-dwell-time.268797/ 20...

Werrington dive under helps cut "21 minutes off the fastest KX to Edinburgh service"

And some of the listed improvements have not been started, as has been pointed out many times in the various ECML timetable threads. I think far too much is being read into a wiki article based on reporting of a total set of improvements that has never been authorised.

    SWR Class 444 charging sockets

Because the original stickers (back when there were a only a minimal number of sockets), have never been updated since the trains were new, and all the extra sockets fitted in the work done a few years ago were given the same stickers. (Indeed, are they a standard Siemens fit on other Desiro UK...

Trivia: Stations that are not managed by the main operator that calls there?

In the general case, station operators just cover logical geographic areas, and in most cases have been left as they were in the 1990s, I don’t believe there’s a routine process of auditing calls/capacity and changing operator if numbers of vehicles slightly changes. There have been a few...

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Termini that are really just like wayside halts

Chathill’s down side station building doesn’t make it look like a wayside halt at all. It’s one of quite a few on the line through Northumberland that was built on the grand scale.

Platforms at Queenstown Road station will also be altered to fit the new track layout

The last serious proposals, in the 2015 Wessex route study, did not include either 8 tracking or removal of the flyover. They did propose a few changes to track use (eg changing the Windsor reversible into the Up Windsor), and that would bring Queenstown Road P1 back into normal use.

Ludlow Crash - No further action against tractor driver

RAIB don’t ever assign blame, it’s stated clearly in the preamble to their reports. They state the facts, then it is for ORR and the courts to deal with the follow up activities.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

History now really. It was about extending a majority of inner suburban services from 8 car to 10 car, either by extending the original 458s to 5 car using ex 460 vehicles, or by running combinations of 2x455 and a 456. It never achieved 10 car on all services all day, as there were not enough...
