New XC fleet by 2035 ?

Longer trains yes. But people are regularly suggesting fast intercity trains, and realistically I don’t think that’s ever going to happen.

Oxford Corridor Phase 2 & Platform 5 updates

The work is required for platform 5, if there was no platform 5 project it wouldn’t have ever started. The western entrance was not a reason, but a useful byproduct.

New XC fleet by 2035 ?

Inadequate? But you’re never going to get long, fast, intercity style trains wasted on such a secondary part of the network. Those routes should have been left with the regional operators.

‘Advisory’ as a noun makes it automatically highly suspect, whatever else it says… :D

Why do TPE 802's operating Edinburgh to Berwick-upon-Tweed and Newcastle run on diesel?

The change to a higher powered 132 kV 3 phase supply from the Berwick substation at Low Cocklaw was all organised and the planning application approved a few years ago, it was all covered in the ECML power upgrade thread at the time. The intended use of SFCs allows for a balanced 3 phase load...

Why do TPE 802's operating Edinburgh to Berwick-upon-Tweed and Newcastle run on diesel?

And the annoying thing about it is the enhancements work at Marshall Meadows feeder station was already well in hand when it was “paused”…

Forthcoming changes to National Rail Conditions of Travel

I wonder if, (based on discussions in previous threads), section 8.2 should be made more explicit in explaining that some railcards introduce significant time restrictions. Eg the argument that’s been raised here that although a Network Card is in use the ‘ticket’ bought with it doesn’t...

GWR standing between first class carriages

Yes, in a typical train made up of a number of multiple units, or in some MU classes where first is ‘in the middle’, you can walk through first to get to another set of standard accommodation. IIRC byelaw 19 only says you must not ‘remain’ in first, not that you cannot pass through.

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

There’s no melting goes on there, AFAICT from YouTube videos they use a huge rotary shredder.

How far can you travel on continuous double track in the UK?

If you leave Newcastle for the Durham Coast without reversing there‘s a short single track section on the Gateshead side of the river.

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

[temporary external pipe] It’s there to connect the brakes from front to back of the whole train including the translators and brake force vehicles, the 555s are probably unbraked during the delivery journey.

Things in living memory which seem very anachronistic now

West Cornwall Puzzles: footbridge replacement at St Erth and new sidings at Long Rock

    Northumberland Line reopening: progress updates

Ah, if it’s a standard choice of diagram then that’s better. Does it provide for well timed down services in the evening peak? Maybe if it becomes permanent they can start highlighting the longer services in the timetable, which will help people with more discretionary travel times.

    Northumberland Line reopening: progress updates

I don’t think that is guaranteeing 4 car trains, really just a statement that they want more, whilst mentioning the shortage of units. But didn’t it first get ‘announced’ a few months back? I see the BBC ran a similar story back in April: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c74nq19w100o

    Completely renumbered station platforms

Fareham had a renumbering at the same time as electrification. P1 was a closed bay on the down (car park) side, with P2-4 the in use platforms counting across to the west. The up through platform changed from P4 to P1, the in use bay from P3 to P2, and the down through changed from P2 to P3...
