    Rail strikes discussion

That government ban was wrong. Surely the whole point of a strike is to publicly show management the level of dissatisfaction of the staff? There is no need to act in an intimidating manner. I've engaged with those on picket lines (non railway). There was a bit of a party atmosphere. I learned a...

    Rail strikes discussion

One rule that should change regarding strikes in any sector is that staying at home shouldn't be permitted. If you're on strike, you should be compelled to attend a picket line for the duration of your shift.

    Re-installing windows 10

All the fans were working fine, but I'm guessing the warmer room air was enough to finish off whatever was failing. I'm slightly obsessive about PC innard cleanliness, and regularly clean out my PC with a dry paintbrush. The machines at work are something to behold on the inside. No one ever...

    Re-installing windows 10

The HDD and memory passed self checks, so therefore from what you've said the power supply could be the culprit. However I have bought a replacement PC, a refurbished HP on Amazon for £150. The casing might be a bit careworn, but it's a significantly faster machine than the one I've just junked...

    Re-installing windows 10

Windows 10 PC bricked yesterday. Repeated blue screen of death. I tried a clean install of Win 10 from a USB stick, but it blue screened half way through. Swapped out the hard drive, same happened. I think the motherboard is dead. Would you agree?

BBC reporting that Agency staff could cover strikes under law change

There genuinely was a madcap idea to have "commuter guards", although it had nothing to do with strike cover. I believe it was early SWT, and the idea was that they would go along closing all the doors on the slammers at Waterloo to save time. I'll see if I can find any reference for this, it...

LNER Class 91/Mk4 service status/withdrawals/2021 refurbishment

I'm inclined to agree. This is harking back to a time which certainly wasn't the golden age of rail. I'm hoping this is a one off, but reading back up the thread I think they are all getting this treatment? Next they'll be bringing back Travellers Fayre sandwiches as well.

Shops & other venues that still insist on masks.

Temperature taken eh? For what purpose as it has nothing to do with Covid. That particular theatre was deemed unnecessary in the autumn of 2020

When did metric start to be taught in British schools?

I use both metric and imperial, and I'm in my 40s. I was taught metric at school in the 80s, but my parents always used imperial at home. Therefore if anyone asks I'm 5 foot 11 tall and weigh 90kg. That really confuses everyone. I will ask for a foot long ruler, then use it to measure in cm. I...

    Re-installing windows 10

According to the update assistant neither my PC nor laptop will run Windows 11. Something to do with the bios lacking a Trusted Platform Module. My PC dates from 2009 and laptop from 2012, so I'll be sticking to Windows 10 till the bitter end. Indeed I just did a cold reinstall of Windows 10 on...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Perhaps GBRF should have a huge recruitment drive, then SWR could subcontract the driving of their trains to them for ever :D :D :D

Class 379 updates (all are OFF LEASE)

There is potential for GWR to swallow up a few more EMUs, for example to free up IETs for Bedwyns etc, but as @43096 says, that unlikely to be what's happening here.

Rail industry preparing for national strikes

Far from it. The government know exactly what they are doing with this. And the RMT have unfortunately fallen hook, line and sinker for it. They can now blame all their shortcomings on the unions.

SWR outgoing Metro fleet withdrawals (complete)

There will come a point where the Evening Standard or some such will cotton on to the fact that the 456s still exist. Cue the headlines of "overcrowded services while trains lie unused in Sidings". SWR will have to come up with a decent response to that, which goes beyond the "jam tomorrow"...
