Why is the linespeed 85 mph?

In my area there are a number of places where the speed limit is 85 mph (on straight track) Why can't they just make it 90 mph? I'm just wondering if there is some historical or engineering reason behind the 85 mph speed limit if anyone knows.

Why are new buses so slow?

Every so often I visit a bus driver friend of mine and the company he works for buys new buses on a regular basis. But i've always felt that each newer model is slower than the last one. Why is there a trend for slower more eco friendly buses whilst newer trains are quicker than older models?
