What does this railway sign mean?

Apologies if it has been asked before, but can anyone tell me what the sign that looks like a saltire on the left in the picture below means on the railway? I’ve seen it in a few places and never worked it out. Thanks. The station is Chapeltown SY if that helps.

    LNER/TP Ticket Issue

Hi all, I bought a TP Airport Advance Ticket from LNER using their digital app for the 1653 Manchester Airport-Sheffield service. The booking confirmation itinerary came through correct for the 1653. However, when I got to Manchester Airport Station in good time for the 1653 as planned, I...

    The Straits of Hormuz

Two more oil tankers ‘attacked’ in the Straits of Hormuz. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-48619771?app=news.world.middle_east.story.48619771.page Who dunnit? And why? Will this escalate further? The US has already sent additional forces to the region. (I’m not currently able to...

    Open Access: Local/Regional Operations?

With the exception of Heathrow Express and Excursion Train operators, Open Access in the U.K. has tended to involve linking London with far away places using intercity style trains. This got me thinking, are there any local or regional routes that could benefit from or justify a regular...

    Network Rail/Police Vans

Hi, I’ve just seen a police van with network rail logo on the side and some form of electric monitoring equipment placed just outside the van near a railway line. What are these vans for? Do Network rail fund them?

Extreme Railways - Chris Tarrant Series 4

Starts tonight. Can anyone explain why in tonight's episode they have a steam charter from Vienna towards the Alps, tucked in behind an electric loco, with another electric loco on the back? Edit: The railway up the Jungfraujoch, looks genuinely incredible. Would love to do the journey in...

    Shunting Accidents

In the course of my work, I pass close by a marshalling yard where some traditional shunting still takes place frequently. I've noticed that some wagons (mainly the 2 axle non bogied ones), get de-railed quite frequently. What aspect of shunting causes this, or is it down to the track quality?

    PCA Wagons Query

Random question; why are the tops of these wagons slanted downwards? What purpose does this achieve? Thanks.

    Chapeltown to Leeds via Meadowhall

If NRE provides a journey that includes a double back, does that make it valid? Just doing Chapeltown-Meadowhall-Leeds, as instructed by NRE, discussed it with the guard and he says you’re not supposed to do this? Edit: I don’t normally do this journey this way, but I’m guessing it’s...

Poll- East Midlands Trains under Stagecoach, how have they done?

Following some interesting discussion in the EMT thread, I thought it would be good to see how the wider forum feels on this issue. https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/east-midlands-franchise-2019.163487/

    The Diamond Twenties 5/5 Pathfinder

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion of this one. Anyone else on this? GBRF Class 66 from Tame Bridge Parkway to London Victoria, then a pair of class 20's covering lines in the South East assisted by a pair of class 73's. Paths aren't on RTT just yet but I'm quite intrigued about...

    Southern Italy-Sheffield by train

So I'm spending around 4 weeks in Southern Italy in June, a trip I make regularly and I'm very bored of flying, last year I decided to drive it, this year I'm opting for the train. It's quite a journey, and I would like your help on a few things please: 1) When do tickets become available for...

    Saphos Trains

This may be of interest to some forum members: A new steam railtour company have launched that are offering discounted (50%) fares for their first year of operation, 12 tours advertised thus far. While not the most adventurous of itinerary's, good value mainline steam may make up for it...

    Rail Head Treatment

It's that time of year. Looking at photographs and google it has occurred to me that all the pictures are relatively modern, with Network Rail high-pressure water blowers travelling around the network literally blasting leaf mulch off the tracks. This got me thinking, how was this problem dealt...

Pathfinder Tours: The Torbay & Dart Explorer 8/7

I'm looking at booking on this trip. I've never been with Pathfinder before, are they any good? What's the bar/catering like? Traction should be 2x class 50 from Worcester which sounds awesome, does anyone have any ideas what traction will be doing Burton-Worcester though?

    Fare Help: Sheffield-Stafford Return

Hi all, I'm looking to travel Sheffield (or Chapeltown SY) to Stafford on Saturday 18/3/17. I need to be there by 9am and return after 8pm. There seems to be virtually no advance fares at all on this journey (apart from one departure at 0511). Can anyone help me with the cheapest way of doing...
