Random question; why are the tops of these wagons slanted downwards? What purpose does this achieve?

Thanks.

A bit of photo searching shows a lot as being flat- did they all start off as simple cylinders, with some/all having a wedge cut out and welded up, to help with powder flow when emptying? That the top is then v shaped is just a side effect, it's the bottom that's more important?

This is a guess.

I think the easiest and therefore cheapest way to make the floors slope down to the centre discharge point is to take two cylinders (which is an inherently strong shape), tilt them down and join them. The result is the top slopes, but simply because the whole cylinder tilts.

The alternative is to make a cylinder whose diameter increases as you move from the ends to the centre (another way of saying that is make a section from a cone) which is inherently weaker and more difficult and more costly.

Like I said, only a guess.
