Should class 180s be banned from the ECML?

The TOC is penalised for unreliability by delay attribution aren't they? If so, that the costs of unreliability to TOCs are not high enough, if they can afford to have 180s (or anything else) sitting down on a frequent basis and causing large amounts of delay.

    Projects on time and budget

All these tend to apply more to bigger projects, particularly "megaprojects" (>$1Bn). There's a Danish guy at Oxford Uni - Prof Bent Flyvbjerg - who has carved out quite a niche looking at why megaprojects "fail". Failure also doesn't just mean time or budget but also benefits delivery. This...

What if theory on the railway network

I was wondering whether all the additional junctions on a much larger network would also mean that there were many more constraints? i.e. more options but lower frequency on main lines due to crossing moves? Particularly as demand rose during the last 20 years.

EMR fares should be lowered to levels comparable with other lines

The RDG report on this probably got lost/forgotten about because of Covid, and probably because govt has just put it in the 'too difficult' box: https://www.raildeliverygroup.com/files/Publications/2019-02_easier_fares_for_all.pdf [Link to Rail Delivery Group 2019 report "Easier Fares for All"]...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Agree... Can't see many gaps in town. The but where there is little or no steelwork (and therefore maybe piling to do) is South from the town down to the footbridge near Braybrooke

EMR fares should be lowered to levels comparable with other lines

So to summarise my understanding of your posts: 1. The way to get more people to travel by train is to conceal more affordable prices in things like split tickets that aren't obviously available from a large number of channels (including the EMR app). 2. It is reasonable for the railway to...

EMR fares should be lowered to levels comparable with other lines

On splitting - open question: I know gaming the ticketing system is expected in air travel (e.g. Skyscanner) and Trainline and others do this for rail, but should this be the expectation of the average rail user? Does this help get people off the roads and (back) on the train? Actually, it's...

EMR fares should be lowered to levels comparable with other lines

Agree with all your post except this as the combination of the fast LNWR service and LNWR-only tickets - in this example I've used Anytime Travelcard Rugby (LNWR only) £98 Harborough £141 Rugby (all) £161 Leicester £189 I'm aware of contacts of mine travelling to Rugby from South side of...

EMR fares should be lowered to levels comparable with other lines

Just because Wellingborough isn't unique doesn't make it OK It may be helpful to think that is isn't just Wellingborough (& North) customers being gouged, but Bedford (& South) travellers being tacitly subsidised through the compounding effects of lower fare increases over an extended period...

    EV Charging at Stations

Without singling out specific posts in this thread, I would urge people to avoid a fallacy that is very common, perfectly human, but is definitely worth trying to catch yourself making: Your rail/EV use cases, circumstances, priorities and values are not universal. Reasons people may want to...

    EV Charging at Stations

This is a good point, and consistent with some of the strategic documents that NR have emitted in the past years - e.g. the Arup/NR "Tomorrows Living Station" study. Most station car parks have a lot of spare capacity evenings & weekends. Offering them up as evening charging hubs increases the...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

This would be consistent with the internal vs external comms about Kettering-MH. There was initial coverage about this back in Feb/Mar 2019 (which might be analogous to the MML commitment in the IRP), but formal announcement that work was underway was only at the end of 2021, by which time...

    Post Covid Passenger Rebound

"Stuck in the past" in more ways than one - following his ... err... helpful... intervention, I saw social media from people in the know that there aren't enough desks in Whitehall for the civil servants to do return to the "traditional" working pattern - i.e. they'd already moved to a hybrid...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

There was also (if memory serves) a link to some CAD/BIM screenshots on LinkedIn that showed steelwork locations North of Harborough, suggesting design work was (once again) well underway.

How can the railway speed up introduction of new trains into service, from delivery of the first one to getting enough crews trained to start service?

Exactly - I think you're agreeing with the point I was making. So it's not the principle of platform engineering that's the issue, it's the competence, capability and culture of (some) train builders to implement it that appears to be in question. However, I still think it's legitimate to...

How can the railway speed up introduction of new trains into service, from delivery of the first one to getting enough crews trained to start service?

50% agree. Modern cars became much more complicated, yet - by and large - reliability continued to improve. So it's not "too complicated" that is the issue, but the industry not being able to manage the growing complexity. This isn't a slur on the railway, because each industry I've ever...

    GBR HQ or Regional HQ

Why put it in the best connected point in the UK? It just gives you a false sense of how well the railway connects up so much of the country. Standing on MK Central, minutes from the Network Rail office and watching modern, rapid, capacious LNWR and Avanti services zipping through will create...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

One of the photos attached to the post shows a bit of software that's using Google Maps in satellite view. Assuming Up = Due North, the direction of the 2-track railway from SE-NW across the map makes me think it's somewhere between the A6 bridge at Great Bowden and Kibworth.

    MML Electrification: progress updates

That does sound promising - sounds like in the old days (i.e. pre-2019), the car park would have been full. I've also spotted a few odds and ends going on - e.g. some piling on the embankment around Bellfields Lane.
