    EMR Class 360's

Kettering (4tph) and Corby (2tph) have benefitted from the new timetable, but Wellingborough was 2tph semi-fast before, and is still 2tph semi-fast. Obviously there is a capacity benefit, but even when the new seats arrive, the fares from Wellingborough (and to some extent other MML stations)...

Which services should be permanently cut to achieve a 10% reduction in railway expenditure?

In England at least, I wonder what cuts the current administration has the political capital to take on right now. This is thinking both narrowly about the IRP debacle and more broadly about support (amongst Conservative MPs) for the current administration. If the railway is going to be...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Thanks, would definitely recommend everybody to have a look through the pdf. Noted that the perceived most complex parts to deliver are North of Derby, Sheffield station and parts of Trent-Nottingham. Suggests we can all relax a bit about Leicester, perhaps. Mention of increased mast spacing...

Future MML services post HS2 and capacity through Trent junctions

There's some good ideas been proposed... However, I think if HS2 cancellation is primarily to save money, then I find it a bit hard to believe that a new railway into Nottingham will be funded, and if they were proposing it (or even investigating it), I am *sure* a huge song & dance would be...

    Speeding up Rail Projects?

This is the nub of the question. It doesn't start with political cycles, funding etc, but does end up there. The average person in the street is going to look at something like Okehampton and say, 'well the track and station was already there, so why not just get on with it?'. My diagnosis...

Future MML services post HS2 and capacity through Trent junctions

I'm going to stick my neck out here and suggest that a lot more thinking about the implications for Trent Junction & surrounding area has happened here since the announcement of cancellation than happened at DfT beforehand. Whilst HS2 services into the centre of Nottingham & Derby seems better...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Google 'Leicester Area Strategic Advice' and the NR pdf will outline the (public) thinking about how capacity challenges would be solved. True but the railway supply point was not the power station but a 400 kV OHL between Ratcliffe village and Kegworth. HS2 were planning their substation...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

They do, although the September 2021 National Infrastructure Pipeline update from the Infrastructure & Projects Authority suggests we could be a bit more optimistic as it's not consistent with this picture. The spreadsheet that's interesting is linked from this page...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

In perhaps the least unexpected event of the day, the Integrated Rail Plan confirms today that electrification of the MML will be extended from Market Harborough to Nottingham and Sheffield via Derby. Of course, still plenty of time to get Grayling back into DfT to cancel it again ;) Link to...

Could East-West Rail (EWR) be electrified?

Looks very promising, is this consistent with the earlier EWR rolling stock tender activity where it suggested they were looking for DMUs for about 4 years? Or did that get binned off in favour of borrowing WMR 196s?

    Integrated Rail Plan (IRP)

42 miles seems like a lot for what is roughly the M42/m6 toll junction to Trent Junctions? From Google Earth it's more like 32 miles.

    Freightliner Class 90s Mothballed?

How are electricity price risks managed in the industry? NR has decent certainty of demand, uses/suppliers 3.5+ TWh each year Given the significance of that demand, and the ability to forecast it, then it could (and perhaps should) be backed against long-term, fixed price contracts with much...

Suggested West Midlands - East Midlands Regional and local services post HS2

Coming back to the original title of the thread "West Midlands - East Midlands Regional and local services", it's noticeable that the Midlands Rail Hub and Camp Hill are listed in the latest National Infrastructure and Construction Pipeline, and a lot of this is happening in the context of...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

"North of Market Harborough" is budgeted for £1.45Bn. Anybody know what that is in £/km? The spend profile makes it look like boots on the ground in second half of 23/24 with the bulk of delivery in 24/25, 25/26 and perhaps being largely complete by the end of 26/27 Also relevant to this...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Link to an FOI response by Network Rail on the topic of MML electrification substations from 2017: FOI2017 00821.pdf (whatdotheyknow.com) "The proposed locations of the four National Grid supply points were: Sundon, Bedfordshire Braybrooke, near Market Harborough Kegworth, near East...

What exactly is a coherent cascade plan?

The first place to start is identifying the changes or needs around rolling stock e.g. - you have new infrastructure and that means new stock that's going to create a surplus (e.g. Crossrail, TL) - pressing need to increase capacity - requirement to retire old stock and look at the match...

MML slow lines north of Bedford

Thinking about the whole issue, this is still a bit of a transitional phase, - i.e. the timetable has only had a couple of months in the real world so perhaps we will see some tweaking? - the 222s will be replaced and presumably electric 810s will have a bit more acceleration which both...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

At least some of the overnight works in June/July are vegetation and cabling around Market Harborough.

MML slow lines north of Bedford

I think the original idea may have been to make the slows 90mph from Bedford to Corby but then wasn't needed as EMR Connect services can fit in the fast lines and most of the freight is relatively slow moving aggregates. Hence little benefit in upgrading. (Edit: i.e. the initial thinking was...

MML slow lines north of Bedford

Yes, it pre-Covid it was the 0730-ish from Derby, and was normally a short (ex GC) HST. I caught it on a couple of occasions. I think it varied where it crossed to the slow lines but always called at the short P3 at Wellingborough.
