East Midlands Railway livery and station branding

I think I may have done a bit too good a job of hiding my sarcasm... Anyway, EMR's Twitter feed has teased a photo about something that is happening next week. https://twitter.com/EastMidRailway/status/1580944179139518464?s=20&t=KYwQLWH4s_CW7UoPGoCfcg How to describe the image? It might even...

East Midlands Railway livery and station branding

Still, they're getting the basics right. https://twitter.com/EastMidRailway/status/1580136435298209794 [Link to the most recent Tweet from the EMR account, outlining how sculptures of their mascot have been installed at Corby, Kettering and Wellingborough stations]

    EMR Connect to Thameslink?

Yes, and I think it's often some people trying to align the MML ops with the ECML and WCML. (although conversely, the MML has similarities with GWML, with 1 operator doing high-frequency cross London, and another taking care of everything else) I don't think this can be delivered without...

    EMR Class 360's

This thread might imply to the casual reader that Cl360 with tired, grubby interiors replaced pristine Cl222s. Have you travelled on a Class 222 recently? In particular, the seats are in an absolutely appalling state now.

    LNER New Trains (2023-)

I agree it's unlikely. However, if you've spent billions upgrading the line, you'd like to have trains that can take advantage, even if it's just from a PR perspective... i.e. obsolete in terms of their original use on ECML Given the way that rolling stock (lack of) strategy is playing out at...

    LNER New Trains (2023-)

However, that is - or was, in Grant Shapps' world at least - very much part of the "Integrated Rail ""Plan"", that Truss recommitted herself to, and truncates HS2 at East Mids Parkway Specifying trains limited to ~125 mph, that will presumably be obsoleted in 15 years doesn't really fill me...

    Restoring your Railway Fund Update

When potato magnate and NW Leicestershire MP Andrew Bridgen is quoted as saying "Very encouraged by Network Rail’s words ‘the Ivanhoe line brings the most benefits to the most people of any rail line reopening project that we are looking at’.", I'm not sure I understand the cynicism on this...

    Restoring your Railway Fund Update

Some kind of update has appeared in the Leicester Mercury website (link below) "Work to reinstate the Leicester to Burton railway line could begin as early as 2024 according to campaigners after a meeting with the Government."...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

And metal theft - colleague that has worked for National Grid says that they energise as soon as possible for this reason.

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Thanks. Do you know if Braybrooke will be switched on before the work you describe is completed, or can this new wiring be powered from existing substations in the same way that Corby is? (I'm thinking about commissioning rather than service trains. Also, and this might have been covered...

    Idea for electricity generation

Can't comment on this specific product, and their website is decidedly cagey about the technical characteristics, but these sorts of tech come with quite a few issues. Small wind turbines are typically not cost-effective generators (in general) so suitable for "behind the meter" applications...

Longest electrified stretch fed from one end?

Isn't the MML as far as Corby currently fed from the new grid supply point near Sundon? That's quite a distance.

East West Rail: Bedford - Cambridge will it ever get built?

Knowing what I know about this country, getting the housebuilding without the railway is a perfectly plausible outcome.

    Abellio management buy-out

Yes, and also no, because the new owners of EMR will inherit all of the contractual obligations as part of the buy-out. So passengers at least should see no real change. If the new TOC model is basically a fixed fee arrangement without revenue risk, and therefore very stable in terms of cash...

    MML Electrification: progress updates

Assuming the Newtons Bridge submission is representative of the others, they will be mostly/wholly under permitted development The application (and I presume the others) are basically NR evidencing to the LPA that they fall within NR's permitted development rights and ensure the LPA have been...

Are Class 700’s really that bad?

Cellnex have a contract to deliver continuous 5G coverage along the entirety of the Brighton Mainline, so I do wonder if on-train wifi will continue to have the same value in the future.

East-West Rail (EWR): Oxford-Bletchley construction progress

<Pedant mode enabled> EU doesn't make "law" (that people or organisations have to comply with), it issues Directives which Member States are required to transpose into national laws. This is why, for instance, there are huge differences in health & safety law across UK and EU, despite being all...

Battery power and bi-mode vs electrification

Yes, but halving the biggest contributer is probably a lot more expensive. So just looking very narrowly from the perspective of achieving net zero, the investment per tonne of CO2 emissions avoided is a key part of how to compare different sectors. There is probably a league table somewhere...

Battery power and bi-mode vs electrification

This is a very good point. Constraints on BEMU charging rates could come from the train, the infrastructure, or a combination of both. Yes, a high-renewables electricity system is also almost certainly a high-hydrogen energy system. However, you'd need to have a wind/solar farm that was...
