    Catch them before they're gone

I am not sure if it was mentioned before: The remaining class 4020 sets in and around Vienna will likely be gone by the end of the year, maybe even by summer.

Just for fun - a new railway after HS2

I do understand it. But first of all, generating new traffic for the sake of itself is not a goal I consider worth pursuing. New traffic in the sense that suppressed demand can finally be decently served; yes, that ist very worthwhile. It can, however, be done on an existing railway if capacity...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

I believe in the end, it would have been a question of whether ERA had approved the stock or not. You could of course appeal a negative decision with the European Courts, but that, in practice, would come much too late. So it is rather negotiation style, trying to convince ERA of the merits...

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

I can see that the construction costs will not be notably higher for a 360 or 400 kph alignment than if building it for 300 or 320. The issue, I believe, will rather be the energy costs for operations? as far as I know this is why France has discarded any idea of going above 320 - same for...

Just for fun - a new railway after HS2

Still, if the Eastern leg of HS2 ever materialised, you would have quite enough capacity on the classic railway to serve the city pairs you mention with high frequency and short journey times. Even from Leicester. So the focus should be on that, not on plans for another new line.

Just for fun - a new railway after HS2

Not original and not funny either, but 1. HS2 to Crewe 2. Some version of NPR. The remaining parts of the original HS2 plans - including the Eastern leg, hopefully via Meadowhall again - will surely follow rapidly then.

No chance of that with some users. They don't seem to understand the word "fantasy" in the thread title. Must be fun at parties...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

Where has it been covered? And how was it a *general* mistake? Why wouldn't you use the classic approach lines when there is not more than, say, two TGV an hour and not a particularly dense classic service, as is often the case in France? Obviously that's not the case between Rugby and...

Proposed new Channel Tunnel services discussion

There will be the Virgin operation too, though.

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

The future of high speed rail in the UK is now tied to the success of the remaining HS2 stump. If people (everywhere) in the UK see it as good and useful, they will clamour for more and the political capital will be there. It would have been much easier though if HS2 phase 2a (to Crewe) hadn't...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

Comparing HS2 with RRX is apples and oranges anyway. German HSL are generally not conceived as upgrades to existing lines either. I am quite sure the Germans have done their homework and come to the conclusion that an entirely new line through the Ruhr (for RRX, or for other services so as to...

DB Hamburg Diversions eg: ICE 613 From 01/05/2026

Exactly the same „Geschwibdigkeitsharmonisierung“ will be in effect between Salzburg and Rosenheim in the second half of this year due to the closure of the Passau line (so that diverted freight can be accommodated more easily).

Major cities with train services not all converging at one central station

For tourists. For people actually living here, it is on the wrong side of the centre, close to the less relevant part and also, the typical Viennese, who is a bit pampered by a very dense and freuquent transport network with stops close together doesn’t consider it walking distance to the most...

New rolling stock planning in the Netherlands

Strengthening/weakening services during the day has fallen out of fashion elsewhere too. On the Vienna S-Bahn, 6-car (two units) used to „lose“ one set outside of the peaks, especially in the evenings, Sundays etc; sometimes also towards the extremities of the network. For the reasons mentioned...

Major cities with train services not all converging at one central station

There is „S-Bahn“ and „S-Bahn“. Networks like Hamburg, Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt have a clear separation to other rail services. Vienna and many, probably most other places do not (Vienna used to be separate for a long time in the sense it had a central section all to itself, then under the...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

Oh, I have been shot down in this exact thread too. There must exist a forum regulation that it’s verboten. I do understand the arguments against such a service of course, and not going to stress the point anymore.

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

You don’t have to hate yourself;) insofar as your string of pearls analogy goes, you are absolutely right - I didn’t think of this. I am not sold on the TGV analogy though. When I thought about the Shinkansen, I meant its closed-off aspect. Obviously HS2 is not completely closed-off, but...

Major cities with train services not all converging at one central station

If we start including S-Bahn services, most major cities will have some lines that don’t touch their central station. It is not only very normal, but often very desirable too. They do have equally -or more - important functions other than as a feeder for mainline rail.

Supervised bus boardings and app based tickets

In Austria, on regional bus routes, tickets are generally checked by the driver. Since I use such buses only occasionally, I cannot say if they now scan tickets routinely or just control on sight, which was the case whenever I used them in the past (on trains, they will always scan). Lots of...

    European Sleeper experience

Always a good thing with night trains, they easily get delayed/diverted at short notice, especially if the run through Germany.
