Vienna - Graz - Ljubljana - Best option?

Not anymore, at least not in Austria. The last left-hand sector, Bruck - Graz, got switched over when the Koralmbahn opened.

Proposed new Channel Tunnel services discussion

I would believe they did. What I pointed out is that ERA approval for France might not automatically mean that the trains are allowed to run on the French half of the tunnel.

Proposed new Channel Tunnel services discussion

Is that certain? I have always understood it to be the case that line specific restrictions - provided they are not discriminatory of course - remain in place. A Vectron could have ERA authorisation for France, but still not allowed to run on an LGV due to axle load. The same might apply to the...

Trivia: Oldest intercity trains by country

Quite likely that you are right. Just wanted to point out that ÖBB does not have any coaches of that generation left in service.

Trivia: Oldest intercity trains by country

The Bmpz73 and Bmz73 at least are much younger than 1980, although obviously somewhat long in the tooth by now (late 1980s and beginning 1990s). ÖBB bought „Eurofima-like“ coaches much longer than other national railways. The other coaches you mentioned are Czech ones. I think all ÖBB coaches...

Trivia: Oldest intercity trains by country

I don’t track it, but I think that the remaining coaches are from later series and much newer.

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

Ah ok, thank you. I know that from Austria, even though it seems it more often happens at the start of the project, not in the finishing push.

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

How on earth can it take another 10 to 13 years to finish a line, where, Euston excepted, works seem to be progressing well?

    [DE/DK/SE/NO] Direct trains Berlin–Oslo

At the moment, I would think going towards hourly would be better than longer trains.

    [DE/DK/SE/NO] Direct trains Berlin–Oslo

Not that I would have the answer, but maybe train capacity on the inner-German segments is also an issue (together with track capacity issues that preclude/slow unattractively down additional services)?. Does DB have a modern train that can go to Scandinavia, apart from the ICE-L? Would that...

Proposed new Channel Tunnel services discussion

I never said different. I was reacting to others stating that they would use a Takt path in Switzerland, which they won’t.

Proposed new Channel Tunnel services discussion

It certainly cannot work. In the peaks, you would need several hundred seats for domestic passengers. Not something that can work with when you would like to have a path in the Swiss Takt. And E* won‘t, believe me. They will get to Zurich if SBB cooperates (which they want), but the path will...

    [DE/DK/SE/NO] Direct trains Berlin–Oslo

It didn’t and it doesn’t. DB never had any intention to reenter the night train market, except for cooperating on NJ services. And I don’t believe there is any kind of information that ÖBB has lost „much money“ on NJ. It is not a cash earner, granted, and in hindsight, the new NJ sets in their...

A shuffle would be extremely unattractive though and probably lose you a significant amount of UK demand, especially at the prices that would still need to be charged.

Proposed new Channel Tunnel services discussion

Not sure how this is relevant. Any train in a Takt path needs to carry domestic passengers and have enough capacity to do so, indeed AFAIK some Lyria get a second set only between Basel und Zurich. Any other service will need to run around the Takt and will invariably get slower paths on a...

Proposed new Channel Tunnel services discussion

How? It wouldn’t be accessible to domestic passengers, unlike Lyris (and their paths are used by other Takt services anyway). If E* goes all the way to Zurich, it will have a slowish path outside the Takt.

    [DE/DK/SE/NO] Direct trains Berlin–Oslo

That trend was always there in Central, if not Northern Europe. It was the rest of the continent that thought they had reinvented the wheel before realising that demand for long-distance day trains is there and strongly increasing. This trend is however much easier to accommodate on what are...

    [DE/DK/SE/NO] Direct trains Berlin–Oslo

It‘s a lot easier to run long-distance daytime trains economically than night trains. Much higher capacity und you will get a lot of of custom between intermediate stations. They won’t primarily carry Berliners to Oslo.

Italo to compete in German high-speed market

Yes, which draw a lot of criticism from SNCF because of the difficulty to obtain paths. But try and go to Court in Italy - maybe you will get decisions in time for the 2033 timetable. And apparently, they got theirs in the end or are about to. Of course, I believe RFI's way is entirely...

Italo to compete in German high-speed market

A "free for all" is indeed not possible, but that does not mean they cannot be combined. They can. You would need to define the recurrent paths and then adjudicate them as "bundles" to the competitors, so that e.g. TOC A gets the path for one hourly service and TOC B for the second one, both...
