A British "Taktfahrplan" - Feasible or Fantasy?

In Switzerland, it would probably still be Birmingham in the end , because they would have done the entire station situation differently (and much more expensively). They might not even made an "integrated Takt hub" out of Birminham (it will become less and less relevant for Zurich e.g. with...

A British "Taktfahrplan" - Feasible or Fantasy?

Factually, very possible. It wouldn't be Swiss-style though, they would never let a "Colwich Jn"-situation arise in the first place.

    [AT] Austrian timetable 2026 online

Not directly timetable-related, but as a point of information: The new ÖBB Stadler KISS classes 4734 (4 car) and 4736 (6 car) should enter service by the end of June, first on line CJX9. They will gradually replace existing stock on the CJX- and REX-Lines traversing the Vienna S-Bahn city core...

A British "Taktfahrplan" - Feasible or Fantasy?

If it were a Swiss-style Takt - and BTW, I agree that Dutch-style is more suitable for most parts of the UK, in many cases much more - I believe the original design start point would be Birmingham New Street, simply because that is very the two long distance lines (XC) that bind together the...

    [AT] Austrian timetable 2026 online

I wrote „diverted via St Gallen“, meaning the same as „via St Margrethen“ (I know that there are other routes available, but the published timetable includes a stop in St Gallen). I don’t know what will happen when Feldkirch- Buchs reopens in October - CH-bound railjets might run to Buchs or...

    [AT] Austrian timetable 2026 online

Another update: From 14th of June 2026 until the timetable change in December, railjet services between Salzburg and Munich/Kufstein/Innsbruck will have extended journey times. The reason is "speed harmonization" - due to the complete closure of the Passau line, a lot of freight will have to be...

A British "Taktfahrplan" - Feasible or Fantasy?

One aspect I would like add to the question of „Swiss or dutch-style“ is rail‘s competitive position vs the private car. On a 30-minute base interval after all, if you include a 5 minute minimum connecting time (which needs infrastructure precautions by itself), in a Dutch-style system, your...

    [AT] Austrian timetable 2026 online

From September 2026 to October 2027, the Praterstern - Hauptbahnhof section of the Viennese S-Bahn-core (Stammstrecke) will be closed for a complete route upgrade. For inner-Vienna trips, there are plenty of easy alternatives, but if you happen to arrive in Vienna by plane: the City Airport...

    Catch them before they're gone

They are most easily to be found on the S40 services (normally from Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, currently from Heiligenstadt only), where currently a significant portion of trains use them (if you look up the online timetable, it's the trains that are not marked with an "accessability" wheelchair...

    Catch them before they're gone

Not surprising, there is a 40 year age difference between the two… The 4020 have provided excellent and reliable service for many years and were quite well suited for the services they were conceived for, but obviously have been outdated for quite a while. The introduction of the new Stadler...

The last services by class 4020 have now been announced for the beginning of July.

Trivia: fastest regional and slowest intercity services

The former Graz - Linz and Graz - Salzburg intercity routes must surely have ranked among the slowest, but like in Switzerland, they have now been downgraded to Interregio.

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

Well, since nothing passenger-wise is running yet (at least, to my knowledge - has it changed?), that is not very surprising. :s

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

Would you consider that economically as similarly marginal?
  15. Austriantrain

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

True, but the reason was because that line is economically marginal. It would never even get planned in the UK.

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

    That one should be compared to HS8, i.e. Glasgow/Edinburgh - Dundee - Aberdeen. :D

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

Well, a cynic might see that they should better use the money they would invest in upgrading the infrastructure for 350 kph for maintenance and safety measures… the Upkeeping of Spain’s gigantic HSL network is going to be financially difficult as it is, no point in adding more, entirely...

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

Oh, but the Spanish do have very concrete plans to run at 350 kph.

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

And what a terrible decision that is. Vastly higher energy costs for no discernible improvement in the competitive position of rail, since it is already dominant. Just Spanish pride (and I love the Spanish BTW, but sometimes don’t understand them..).

Price and time saved difference between HS2 at 225mph and 185mph

Preston? But that might be dealt with in a combination of London - HS2 - Preston (with more stops than the Scottish services) and Manchester - Preston - HS2 - Scotland services.
