What lines, closed either by Beeching, or later, in the 70's would be viable now, if they had remained open?

I dont mind the Bentham line to be honest, i have found it quite useful on several occasions over the years, my only criticism is that it takes an age to deal with Carnforth-Lancaster portion. It also serves a useful place to send the fast DMU northern service to Skipton, alternating with...

What lines, closed either by Beeching, or later, in the 70's would be viable now, if they had remained open?

Could i ask, what do you consider to be a "well-used" line? (In terms of service provision and passengers)

    Barnstaple line closed by flooding

Scour is a different beast to flooding. I suspect there is potential for more than just river level at play here. It is mostly influenced due to a change in velocity/energy and as river channels generally narrow under bridges the increase in velocity can cause scour to happen rapidly. All sorts...

What lines, closed either by Beeching, or later, in the 70's would be viable now, if they had remained open?

Are you aware about private businesses that shut down unprofitable locations? Thats very common. If the lines hadnt have been nationalised they would have been closed if deeply unprofitable as this happened with many lines before nationalisation

What lines, closed either by Beeching, or later, in the 70's would be viable now, if they had remained open?

This is a poor analogy. Its more like Beeching cut the opening hours of a shop by closing it an earlier so reducing staffing costs when income was at its lowest. Yes it lowers the convenience but also reduces cost at a greater ratio to expenditure. The question is how far do you cut the...

What lines, closed either by Beeching, or later, in the 70's would be viable now, if they had remained open?

It is the right level of network because it is what we as a nation are willing to pay. The railway is heavily subsidised (less so than other countries) but it is a large budget item. Any addition to the network at this point is adding large amounts to subsidy for a much less gain in revenue. On...

What lines, closed either by Beeching, or later, in the 70's would be viable now, if they had remained open?

I agree wholeheartedly with this. Now you can view Beeching as the big bad monster who closed railways because he was a nasty person. I am sure for example he hated Ripon with such a passion that he went up there personally just to make sure the railway was ripped out, and salted the earth as...

What lines, closed either by Beeching, or later, in the 70's would be viable now, if they had remained open?

I would say that Beechings biggest failure was that he created this Bleary eyed nostalgia for railways that served one man and his dog and only existed in the first place because different companies wanted a slice of the railway pie ending up with duplicate routes and the like. A lot of places...

What lines, closed either by Beeching, or later, in the 70's would be viable now, if they had remained open?

What a lot of the discourse around Beeching seems to imagine is that it was Beeching (or Marples or whomever) closing down railways for the benefit of the car. Lets be honest, look at the improvement in cars from the early 1950s to the late 1960s. Personal wealth and quality of vehicles...
