Should physical barriers be installed to prevent access to platforms shortly before trains depart?

“Oh, it’ll be alright - that train always leaves 2 minutes late” 1787919541 90 seconds is, I agree, excessive. However, the 30/40 applied by the TOCs I use is within a reasonable margin (though I accept I have thought otherwise on occasions trains have left before my nose- until sensible...

East-West Rail (EWR) countdown to entry into service

And with the same short-sightedness that bedevils the management / shareholder “side”, is incapable of looking beyond the immediate.

    Bristol Temple Meads new entrance.

Yes sorry - my mental compass was defeating my attempts to describe it more precisely. As said in the quote - the new access to the subway at the platform 13/15 end.

Should physical barriers be installed to prevent access to platforms shortly before trains depart?

That would temporarily fix the problem until people got used to it, then it would all start over again. Some people are just “last minute” people and we ll sometimes miscalculate. Others are late by force of circumstance, but whenever you set the cut off, there will always be those who are just...

    Bristol Temple Meads new entrance.

The hoardings are now down and there’s a big notice announcing the official opening as being at 16.00 on Monday 7th September.

Cambridge South : no parking (and local CCTV is dissuade anyone from stopping near by...)

In this case, what they are wanting to do is reduce car traffic in the area around Cambridge South (by enabling inbound travel by rail). The last thing they want to do is to encourage people to drive to the new station.

Cambridge South : no parking (and local CCTV is dissuade anyone from stopping near by...)

People south of Cambridge who drive to a station be exactly the same options as they did before. What this has done is provide a(mother) way of accessing (particularly) the area without a car.

Cambridge South : no parking (and local CCTV is dissuade anyone from stopping near by...)

Indeed, was not the principal purpose of the station to be a "destination" (not in itself, naturally!) rather than an origin. and to help cut local car use?

    ScotRail filthy windows

How odd - your initial post popped as a new one - without any of the responses. Didn't actually read the posting date!!

    ScotRail filthy windows

If it were anywhere else in the country, I would assume that the state of the windows reflected (pun unintended) a laudable response by the railway to the drought conditions. Not sure that applies north of the border, though.

Why doesn't Ripon have a train line towards Harrogate or York?

You could pose the same question about countless towns across the country and the answer will be much the same: some are, but not enough to push it up the priority list (especially if it would mean those people paying more taxes to pay for it).

Trivia: oldest station with the same rolling stock it had when it opened

In terms of the first question, any of the GSWR (Barrhead - Carlisle) clutch that reopened since the demise of loco-haulage. Sure that’ll be more than just Sanquhar, though the earliest predate the change.
  13. The exile

So SWR, why do you need my phone number?

At least in part, presumably, because it tended to be 1 landline per household rather than per person, and all those living in communal situations (students, bedsits etc) would have tended to share a landline (if at all) but will now have their own phone.

    Bad traffic enforcement

The question of course is how long the “significant period of time” is before an illegally parked vehicle becomes an abandoned one.

Northern Explorer for 2 persons; valid for one to travel alone?

There would be an obvious issue if the later boarder is doing so at a barriered station (and a theoretical one in a penalty fare area)

    Delay repay is it destructive?

That’s easy to say - less easy to do when your hourly train has a fifteen minute “connection” onto your hourly bus.

We could not connect to the services that deliver your tickets

That would at least leave the customer no worse off in lots of cases.

    Football

OK - “score at half time” (unqualified) to me means “in the match that is currently being played”. Still not good for Celtic but not as dramatic as going into half-time 4-0 up on the night and then conceding 5 in the second half.

We could not connect to the services that deliver your tickets

Not if you settle your CC bill in full by direct debit and the refund doesn’t arrive in time to be included. Also a (different) problem if you’re nearing your card limit.

We could not connect to the services that deliver your tickets

No it is not. It is the best they choose to do. When a refund is evidently because of a systems failure (so therefore cannot be part of a money laundering exercise) an organisation should be required to offer the refund immediately in cash or replace at no charge.
