    Most Disappointing Rolling Stock.

I have to say, the Mk5As as now used on Chiltern. They could've been a game changer in terms of modern loco-hauled rolling stock, but there are so many things that make them a worse passenger experience from the Mk3s that preceded them. Rough riding, much smaller windows which don't align with...

Station pick-up/drop-off areas inside a multi-storey or decked car park

Banbury has this in the East side multi storey car park. It's not the most pleasant place for a lone/vulnerable passenger to wait at night for a pick up.

    WCR - Jacobite 2026

Many years ago, when arriving on a late sleeper, the Jacobite was not held for us, but all intending passengers were put on a bus at Fort William, which then caught up the Jacobite during its layover at Glenfinnan, so we at least got to do most of the journey. Things may well have changed since...

GWR plan to run overnight North Downs Line (Gatwick Airport to Redhill to Reading) services.

Indeed, I read the original article on RailAdvent, which you'd expect to be more thorough than Wokingham Live, but it didn't list these stops. However the GWR site itself states: Pity I don't live in walking distance of North Camp station any more, these would've been quite handy!

GWR plan to run overnight North Downs Line (Gatwick Airport to Redhill to Reading) services.

Pity it couldn't have stopped at one of Ash, North Camp, Farnborough North or Blackwater to serve the large Aldershot/Farnborough conurbation. It's not like any of those stations need to be staffed overnight.

Trivia: Physically connected neighbouring train stations with no regular direct train service.

Appleford-Swindon Directly connected via the Didcot West Curve but nothing routed that way stops at Appleford. Arguably also Appleford-Cholsey (neighbours if you don't count the Didcot avoiding line as part of Didcot station). Reading West-Tilehurst?

Oyster with Disabled Persons Railcard being charged full adult fare on-peak & railcard fare off-peak

I have had this happen too, but it ended up with my Oyster being blocked. I had a long phone call with TfL to get them to issue a free replacement and refund of the credit. Then got the discount re-added at the Liverpool Street travel centre as I figured they'd be more likely to get it right...

Additional routes that could justify a 24hr per day train service?

London-Oxford Two possible routes, (Paddington via Reading or Marylebone via High Wycombe) with little overlap means that if one route is closed, the other could still remain open. The Oxford Tube coach service between London and Oxford runs all night, so there's obviously some demand on this...

Buxton Spa Express and realtime trains

This didn't used to be a problem in the days when tour timings and tickets had to be sent out to passengers by snail-mail, so had to be confirmed well in advance rather than sent via e-mail a day or two before. Therefore it strikes me that this is the usual situation, train planning departments...

Buxton Spa Express and realtime trains

Sadly for me because it means I cannot do some of the railtours I would like to do. I won't risk booking if I don't know I'll be able to get to them and I'll end up losing my money or having to pay for a last minute hotel! Sadly for the tour promoter because they then don't get my money! If...

Accompanying a Disabled Railcard holder for part of their journey: is that allowed?

I don't know about chapter and verse, but can't see any reason why it shouldn't be acceptable, as long as every time you could possibly encounter a revenue check, you are accompanying the railcard holder. I can definitely see a possibility where a disabled person is comfortable doing part of a...

Brunel Arcade, the old new Reading Station

Being able to be dropped off underground proved very useful yesterday when the rain was absolutely torrential. It's a shame that there isn't a proper covered walkway between drop off point and the station entrance on the north side.

    Vintage Trains Birmingham-Newcastle 18/10/2025

Michael Whitehouse of VT has recently advised that 5043 is being used sparingly at the moment, because it needs its tyres replacing. I'm guessing sending her all the way to Newcastle might well use up too much of their remaining life.

Buxton Spa Express and realtime trains

In my experience, the times suggested by tour operators are often massively optimistic, with far later departures and far earlier finishes than end up being confirmed. The only exceptions tend to be regular itineraries (e.g. Cumbrian Mountain Express from Euston), where there's a regular path...

Buxton Spa Express and realtime trains

I received an e-mail advertising it just 30 minutes ago, so this suggests it's still running! There has been a really bad spell lately of confirmed tour timings only being available a day or two before, which is a pain for those of us who need to work out if we can join a railtour by train, or...

Trivia: Unusual fare and ticketing quirks on public transport in other countries.

When travelling on buses in Philadelphia about a decade ago, for journeys in from the suburbs to the transit centre/subway interchange, you'd pay the driver on boarding, but on the return, everyone would just pile on at the transit centre and then pay the driver on alighting. I don't know if...

Hot water delivered from tanker to loco tender at mainlineside.

I definitely remember reading about this in Steam Railway, and also thought it was an LMS Pacific involved. The AIs reckon it was Sir Nigel Gresley in Garsdale in April 1995, but this could be completely made up and they couldn't point me at an original source.

Chiltern MK5s Starting 2026 (non speculative updates thread)

There was still a Mk3 set in Wembley depot when I went past yesterday. Is that now not working the Risborough diagrams?

Termini that are much quieter than a nearby station

Alton has about a third of the users of Farnham (which is presumably why Farnham-Alton wax singled and some trains used to terminate at Farnham off-peak).

Forthcoming changes to National Rail Conditions of Travel

A bit of disingenuous messaging from Chiltern here: https://www.chilternrailways.co.uk/refund-information (My emphasis). This doesn't accurately reflect the NRCoT, which allows a refund due to any kind of disruption, regardless of the cause!
