Article referring to passengers staging "sit ins" on cancelled trains

I vaguely recall reading that it happened at Farnham in the distant past, when an Alton train was turned short there with a long wait for the next one. EDIT: Found a link, it was in 2001 https://www.farnhamherald.com/news/passengers-force-swt-to-go-all-the-way-155031

Could extending the hourly GWR Oxford fast to Banbury ease capacity off XC (and would it work)?

Banbury-Oxford-Reading is a key commuter flow and really ought to have a proper, decent frequency 'commuter' service without having to rely on the mostly-hourly XC service and the 2-hourly (ish) GWR stoppers. The XC services tend to be overcrowded and unreliable, regularly suffering delays due...

    Barrier use at Banbury Station

I have noticed this too. The lack of proper/consistent revenue enforcement was fed back to Chiltern management at a stakeholder meeting I attended last year, so it's possibly this has been taken onboard.

Best Decorated Station For Christmas 2023

May not be the best decorated, but have to give a mention to the staff at Banbury who decorated the station, only to have the decorations destroyed by vandals a few days later! https://banburyfm.com/news/vandals-trash-decorations-at-train-station/ Despite this, they put them all back up again...

    Disabled Persons railcard on Oyster

Just for the record, I got my railcard loaded onto my replacement Oyster at the 'Visitor Centre' in Liverpool St. I subsequently checked it on a ticket machine and it says 'Disabled Railcard' in the top left rather than just 'NR Railcard.'

    Disabled Persons railcard on Oyster

I had exactly the same problem with mine. It looks like the tube station staff member set the wrong discount flag on my card (the normal NR Railcard one rather than the Disabled Railcard one). You should be able to check which discount is added by touching the card onto a ticket machine and...

    "Service reported as being busy"

Or that RTT will tell you there's a second unit, and you position yourself in the perfect location to board it, only to find it locked out of use due to a lack of train crew... forcing you to run down the platform and join the back of the scrum to board the front unit! (Maybe just a bit of...

What's been the single most exciting development for UK heritage railways in 2023?

I'd give a shout out to the Darjeeling Tank Locomotive Trust who, with just a couple of months notice, managed to galvanise enough support and raise enough funds to secure 19B and coaches at auction, organised her a new home at Statfold, ran a successful 'supporters day' and have made good...

    Steam Through Slough 05 12 23

The other was Vintage Trains with Castle 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe...' I was on it! This one went direct from Banbury to Bath via Oxford and rather than via Princes Risborough and Slough. The Saphos one was definitely a Black 5.

    Steam Through Slough 05 12 23

I saw the return working at Bath and it was a Black 5 (presumably 45231) rather than Braunton.

Your Operator of the Year 2023

For me best (least-worst) is probably Chiltern. Although they are still massively short of stock, all the times I've had to use them to get to London, the trains have run, been on time and I've not been forced to stand. It's good that they've also tried to fill in some gaps in the Birmingham...

Has Chiltern abandoned "Know your Train"?

They were certainly working on Thursday 9th Nov (as I was using RTT to check my commute), and the historical data has them up to Friday 10th, but not Saturday 11th onwards. Hopefully a technical issue that'll be resolved, as it's really handy to know which services are (decent capacity) Mk3s and...

    Trains running 12-20 November?

Great Central Railway is running their 'Last Hurrah' gala on 18/19 November https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/special-events/last-hurrah-of-the-season/ and a 'normal' service the weekend before.

Weather refund for unused ticket - how much?

I had the same issue with an XC refund due to disruption a while back. Although I'd already initiated the refund via the app, I e-mailed them with my booking details and they refunded me the additional £10 as well.

    Animals On Seats

My partner and I regularly take our dog on trains (both heritage and main line) as we don't drive. She's so used to it that she'll head for the first bay of empty seats and curl up on the floor to claim her space, get comfy and make us fit our legs around her! :-) Most passengers who hadn't seen...

    Miniature railway driving requirements.

There was a relatively recent guide 'HS2020' issued by the HSE (https://www.pcmrsg.org.uk/_files/ugd/4dab8c_a71bcd9c062f4bc6b81e3894cfea5f31.pdf) outlining safety guidance for passenger carrying miniature railways. Under the 'Competence of operational personnel' section it states: It may be...

Controversial railway opinions (without a firm foundation in logic..)

My controversial opinion: Seat reservations should be abolished, or charged at a level that discourages people from booking them speculatively or for short hops (e.g. £5-£10 a leg) and limited to maybe 1/4 of the train's seating capacity. They seem to cause increased dwell times, arguments...

    December 2023 Timetable Change

The early Saturday morning Chiltern services from Banbury and High Wycombe to Birmingham Moor St appear to have gone. From Banbury this makes the first northbound train the 0658 XC instead of the 0600 Chiltern.

Trivia: Instances where you have benefitted from a delayed train

Have had this quite a few times when heading from the North East towards Reading (with CrossCountry's abysmal post-Covid timetable). CrossCountry train from the York direction arrives at New Street at xx04 or xx08, just missing the onwards xx03 connection towards Reading. However, the...

Revenue Protection at Heritage Railway Galas

Was there all three days and had my ticket checked 3 or 4 times, usually before departure from Porthmadog as the guard was locking the doors.
