    GC O4s at 84B Oxley

The NER decided to finish with its 04’s in summer 1951. Nine worked briefly on the WR before being swapped for ER WD’s. WR needed extra freight locos at that time. The locos concerned 63620/8/73, 63770, 63812/6/23/35/81 were transferred to WR on 2/9/51 (there is a 20/9/51 misprint in Yeadon 24A...

Grand Central apply for Newcastle - Brighton direct

XC are Government controlled and have been since 2020. The private sector involvement is just being the DfT’s managing agents, however badly or well they do it. When XC is taken over fully next year, 100% of their staff will transfer, unless some of the directors bail out or get pushed out...

    Least disappointing new Rolling Stock?

755 for me. They really are the business.

    Most Disappointing Rolling Stock.

Never been keen on the pendos - feel very cramped in them and the tilt, for me, is disorientating. Of the more recent stock, I find the 195/331 stock gives a very basic looking offer and the ride isn’t stunning.

Any other UK units that don't have traction interlock?

Ah! That makes more sense, thanks. I don’t know when that was introduced. All the 1970’s era stock were not fitted from new and I am fairly sure a lot of the 1980’s era stock weren’t either.

Any other UK units that don't have traction interlock?

Not on any units I’ve ever been involved on. No door link with the signalling system. You can always isolate the door interlock in specific circumstances in order to move the unit away. As far as 313 units are concerned, I’ve actually seen one passing by in passenger service with all its doors...

What influenced where BR scrapped its own locos?

It vastly reduced the need as the move to newer traction picked up speed at the same time as all the changes to the works overhaul regime. You could also set up a contract with a scrappie to recover certain materials if you needed to.

Major disruption to / from Manchester Piccadilly - 16th April 2026

No, a result of the balkanisation of the railway under Sectorisation, nothing to do with privatisation. Certain freight sub-sectors put a complete ban on their locos being used for other purposes so Intercity had to introduce thunderbirds or spare locos, starting on the ECML.

What influenced where BR scrapped its own locos?

The mid 1980’s saw a big change in disposal policy, all based around the changes happening at the BREL works. Quite apart from the closures, they were all being downsized as a result of the move to CEM (Cost Effective Maintenance) overhauls. With the increase in withdrawals and now the...

    GBR Freight nationalisation?

No, there are no plans. However, DRS is a public company (because it hauls the nuclear traffic) but there are no plans for it to take over other companies. It would need funds to do so.

Skegness to Newcastle/summer Saturdays mid 80s

The Newcastle (1021) was in the WTT for two years only, 1990 and 1991. It was a Leeds (1020) in the 1989 WTT. The summer of 1992 saw only one booked SO LHCS working, the 1810 Derby. A bit of a contrast from the 1958 WTT when there were 26 summer SO LHCS departures from Skeg.

    BR Letter Reference Codes

It is very rare to allocate individual letters to individual pro numbers. That is a nightmare for any filing system - you usually group the activity so correspondence would usually be allocated to the relevant progressive file. In this case PR 358 would seem to indicate Preston Division 358...

    Cost Per Minute Of Delay

No, Open Access is the same as the other passenger TOCs. Both have caps for trains/monitoring points which they do not have to pay extra for. It’s charter operators that pay a per train mile charge for their cap because they are more directly exposed to the costs of individual delays, especially...

If fitted with door locking mechanisms, could the class 310s/312s lasted much longer?

Sliding vs Ordinary doors was a hot topic in the 1960’s. It was felt that ordinary doors provided better passenger on/off times for outer suburban stock so that is why they stayed in production for so long. I can vouch for this as an AM10 punter for several years. As the train came into...

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

You are confusing the “Core Term Expiry Date” (CTED) with the actual transfer date. They are being taken back in order of CTED expiry, not on the actual date itself. So the next one to go after Chiltern will be GWR. The transfer to DfTO doesn’t bring that much change as all the “franchise” TOCs...

First Rail Stirling (Lumo) Rolling Stock

One single 7 car is no use to the two TOCs who are leasing the units. It’s all a moot point anyway as the decisions have been made.
