    Leeds station improvement updates

The 9-11 island is pretty narrow (as is 16) but the rest don't seem too bad. I agree it isn't ideal for doing anything while the station is in use. The western footbridge had the advantage of plenty of blockades during the rebuild- and of course the old subway still being available at least at...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

It does, thanks. It appears that the finished island platform is actually being relocated sideways (from the POV of the tracks) towards the "south" (in quotes as I'm not sure of the precise cardinal direction at this point, but treating the railway as being on an east-west axis) with the slow...

    Leeds station improvement updates

Certainly something closer to the standard the western footbridge sets- and able to be used by all, would be preferable. Even better if it could be accessed directly from the concourse (with a gateline of course) through the unit currently occupied by WH Smiths.

    Leeds station improvement updates

At risk of sounding like a broken record (being played at a very low rpm) much of the congestion around Leeds station could be fixed by having a more substantial secondary footbridge at the north end of the trainshed. If an improved bridge was provided at that end and signage used to encourage...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Thanks- though for trains heading towards Dewsbury/Wakefield to use platform 2 needs more than just the platform edge being rebuilt presumably- as the line which previously passed that platform was the up line. Unless that up line has been slewed further out, there wouldn't be space for another...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

At present, trains towards Huddersfield/Brighouse coming off the Healey Mills route can only use P3. Not sure how many "interim" arrangements there will be throughout the project but I'd expect P3 to still be required up until the grade separation at Thornhill is at least partially complete...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

One of the recent Sarah Bell videos asked in a caption if this would be the shortest section of OLE in the country. There used to be a short run (c.50m) over one siding within Healey Mills yard, but I think that was just for training and gauging purposes.

    Thanking a bus driver

When I worked in a supermarket in Taunton in my younger days, there was one particular customer (an older lady of generous means) who would address my colleagues and I as "staff" with every sentence- so it was "excuse me staff, could you please...(whatever the request was)", or "thank-you...

How long could old DMU stock keep rolling?

Why would that be any worse than say, fuel deliveries to their local service station? It's just a tanker full of stuff being handled by people who are trained to do so safely.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

The boundary of where Trinity Street (A640) ends and Westgate begins has always seemed a little foggy to me, and I'm Huddersfield born and bred. New North Road was severed by the construction of the ring road (before my time) so it can be a bit confusing. For example the "New North Road Baptist...

Major / trunk roads built upon former railway routes?

No longer trunked, but parts of the old alignment of the A361 (now the B3227) also use the alignment of the same route.

    Leeds station improvement updates

It's just the one (up) escalator, as per all groups of platforms at Leeds apart from 0-8 by the main entrance.

Line names that are no longer used.

During the 1980s and 1990s the line from Leeds to Manchester Victoria via Bradford Interchange, Halifax and Hebden Bridge was known as the "Caldervale Line" on PTE publicity. This was eventually changed to the more historical and less contrived-sounding (IMO) "Calder Valley Line" before the PTE...

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

I was responding to your comment that: Are the tyres fine or are they awful? If I was signing up to buy a new car and the tyres it came with felt unsafe, I'd be expecting the dealer to upgrade them at no cost to myself... or I'm walking away.

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

If I was buying a new car, I wouldn't expect to have to fork out for my own set of improved tyres in order to make it handle safely in the sorts of conditions which are commonplace in northern England. It should have decent tyres suitable for the conditions when it rolls off the dealership- if...

Trivia: What are the quirkiest railway stations in Britain?

Depends on which definition of "nation" you're working with. Birmingham International has services to two other countries within the "nation of nations" that is the UK. ;)

    TPE 1st Food: Liverpool-Manchester

A few years ago, TPE stewards had a habit of sprinting down the aisle as if they were trying to break the land speed record, which obviously didn't make it easy to purchase anything from the trolley... Had to chase them down to buy an overpriced cup of tea, let alone any food!

    Skipton-Colne again... sorry!

Back when the route was open, what sort of longer distance traffic did it get? I mean in terms of how far beyond Skipton/Rose Grove the regular services tended to run? One of the things that turned many pro-rail people against this particular project was the rather fanciful proclamations of the...

I didn’t know they had that!! Rolling stock you didn’t know that company operated.

Don't recall ever seeing 320s in Yorkshire. Over the years I've seen an assortment of borrowed 321s on the Leeds to Doncaster runs, from First Great Eastern to Silverlink and London Midland. Any use of 320s would have been controversial if it happened prior to them being fitted with toilets...

I didn’t know they had that!! Rolling stock you didn’t know that company operated.

During the time the hired 90 was in use, I only saw the GNER liveried one on the service once. I even saw each of the "European" ones at least twice, with the Belgian example being quite a frequent occurrence.
