    What's your latest acquisition?

Amazing what a difference a livery makes to the appearance of that unit- I'd struggle to identify that it was a Koploper if you hadn't said, because I'm so used to them being yellow! A close up of the end of the centre car could easily be mistaken for a 158 in Northern colours, maybe there's a...

Future for Class 180 Adelante fleets

Because (a) there are plenty of VT fanboys and girls who rave about Pendolinos and won't hear a bad word against them; and (b) because they get brought up as mitigation whenever someone mentions how disastrous everything else that Alstom produced in the late 1990s was. If you're offered a choice...

Future for Class 180 Adelante fleets

Seeing as we're already deep in the weeds of speculation, no... but the case for dragging de-engined 180 cars behind a loco gets even dodgier once your formation is <5 cars.

Altnabreac station and the various legal disputes around it

Stick whistle boards up about 20m from each end of the platform for good measure! I only hope the outcome is successful for the railway...

Driving well below the speed limit

The obvious answer to the sunglasses thing is to get contact lenses, then just wear regular non-prescription sunglasses. 8-)

Driving well below the speed limit

Sorry for quoting a three-week-old post, but it's always a sign that someone is driving inattentively when they see the yellow box and immediately brake to 28mph despite not being in a 30 zone! There's one on the A636 on the boundary between Clayton West and Scissett that has this happen a lot...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

Has it been that speed for a long time? I'm now wondering if my judgement is clouded by being mostly on the stoppers the last few years... the "wiggle" for want of a better term from the loop line to the main and then on to the Up Huddersfield is far slower. That's another advantage of the...

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

There's also the removal of restrictive junctions, such as the new alignment of the up fast line at Heaton Lodge. Not sure of the actual speed of the current arrangement but it feels awkwardly slow.

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

I just hope the site security is up to snuff... let's just say it's not the most salubrious part of Huddersfield!

Transpennine Route Upgrade: What might the "new money" be spent on, and how can frequencies be increased?

Skip-stopping was supposed to be the "magic bullet" prior to the upgrade work starting with the ill-fated 2018 timetable. The stopping pattern at my local station (Batley) changed from 2tph evenly spaced (one to Huddersfield and one to Manchester Victoria and beyond via Brighouse); to 2tph split...

    Transdev Blazefield

It was a yellow single decker. I think there was some red in there somewhere along with the MyBus logos, but it was a couple of weeks ago so I can't recall any further details with any degree of confidence!

    Transdev Blazefield

Funny you should say that... A couple of weeks ago I saw a bus in the West Yorkshire "MyBus" schools livery operating on Denby Darts D1. Didn't note the reg as I was driving and I'm not up on types, but it did strike me as unusual.

£48m boost for Penistone line service doubling and capacity increases

Reopening Crigglestone curve would be a "nice to have" but I deliberately omitted it on cost grounds. Reversing at Kirkgate could be done today, and what you lose in time with the additional mileage and reversal is mitigated by the potential additional revenue from serving Wakefield. Omitting...

Did BR Sectorisation Kill Mail by Rail? Can it Return?

That's a good question which I'm not qualified to answer. I was making no statement on the desirability of such a policy, just commenting that it should be easier for the state to enact a policy when it has control of all the levers.

TRIVIA: Places outside London that had ex-LT Routemasters

Remember going out of my way to use these in my misspent youth! HJC even ran them on a Bradford route for a while, riding an old Routemaster all the way from Bradford to Halifax was great fun, though they obviously couldn't use the guideway up Manchester Road! The livery was quite similar to the...

Transpennine Route Upgrade: What might the "new money" be spent on, and how can frequencies be increased?

I'd be hugely shocked (though quite pleased) if there was ever a business case for a more than 2tph local service west of Huddersfield. Slaithwaite and Marsden aren't tiny places but they are fairly self-contained and surrounded mostly by fields.

Did BR Sectorisation Kill Mail by Rail? Can it Return?

A number of stations also lost the ability to handle postal traffic, Leeds City being an example as the quite extensive set of mail sidings (formerly Wellington station) were turned into much-needed additional passenger platforms. It is of course far easier for the state to mandate the postal...

£48m boost for Penistone line service doubling and capacity increases

Those figures do support the idea of a second service omitting stops, however ticket sales will not factor in those using PTE tickets such as West Yorkshire MCards. In my experience there's not an insignificant number of people travelling between intermediate stops, though this tends to be...

£48m boost for Penistone line service doubling and capacity increases

With the current infrastructure, skipping two or three stops won't gain all that much time though. The current circa. 80 minute journey time end-to-end is unlikely to get below 65mins with a skip-stop pattern, and I'm not sure that's enough to justify some stations not getting the improved...

    Class 13 question

I'd often wondered the same thing myself- to my untrained eye the obvious solution would be to pair the two locos "nose to nose" making effectively a miniature version of a pair of Class 20s with full visibility from the rear of either cab. Of course the reality is somewhat different to how I...
