Countries with the fewest / no locomotive-hauled passenger services

San Marino is technically another one. They only have a very short section of the old railway that has been restored as a heritage railway. The train they have is an EMU which runs when the railway opens a few times a year. They have no locomotives. Denmark has locomotive hauled trains. DSB...

What were the most/least successful, post millennium bus bodies in London?

Mercedes Benz Citaro Rigid buses and Optare Tempo buses have never been particularly popular on the TFL network. Only a couple of small batches were ever used. I suppose one of the reasons is the these are longer length single deckers and TFL prefer double deckers for higher capacity.

Bus fares and ticket pricing oddities.

One other oddity i noticed the other week is that Reptons Coaches still charge the old Discovery ticket prices. So you can save money by getting your ticket on their buses. Discovery is a ticket issued and accepted on over 30 bus operators across the Kent / Sussex / Surrey / Hampshire /...

Trivia: List of Keilbahnhof stations in Britain

A few other similar such stations that i can think of off the top of my head: Camden Town Dalmuir Kilwinning Lewes Lewisham Marks Tey Saint Denys Sutton I do not have a full list but there are certainly dozens of others such stations.

    Gatwick Airport station taxis

The buses take both cash and contactless. You can chose either method. It is the same price either way. Make sure to ask the driver for a "Single to City Place" on your outward journey and for a "Single to South Terminal" on your return journey in order to pay the lower £1.70 short hop fare. So...

Question about Southern (and GatEx) 377s and 387s

It seems so odd that some depots still do not sign them. Both the 377 and 387 are very similar and all that is required is a short simple conversion course for more drivers to sign them. Surely from an operational perspective it would make sense to get 100% of Southern drivers to sign them. It...

End of the line for Paris’ iconic metro ticket

Thank you for sharing this. Useful to know some of these dates in advance. That is dissapointing that onboard cash ticket purchases are being removed on buses. That is my usual method of purchase when i am in Paris and taking the bus. It just makes it so easy and simple to just walk on a bus...

How many operators use Selective Door Opening ?

Southern did the same with their 319/455/456 when they ran South of Dorking in longer than four coach formation. For the Southbound trains the guard would join at Dorking and immediately lock out the rear four coaches before the train continued. For the Northbound trains the guard would unlock...

    Gatwick Airport station taxis

I would not recommend a taxi ride for such a short distance. Firstly the airport road layout means that the taxi has to take an extremely long route to reach there. The route from the taxi rank to the CAA HQ involves exiting the South Terminal area and going all the way along Airport Way in the...

Question about Southern (and GatEx) 377s and 387s

Yes the 387/1 387/2 387/3 are indeed all one common pool nowadays. The practice of keeping a separate pool of GX livery units has ended and any 387 can be put on any 387 diagram. It creates such a big branding mess. You now get frequent Southern services along the BML often formed entirely of...

Enterprise Substitutions (DMUs instead of Enterprise stock)

I noticed a lot of cancellations being reported during this week due to multiple train technical faults and flooding. They were also reporting a lack of first class accommodation and reduced catering on quite a few services earlier in the week. I wonder if 29000 sets ended up on Enterprise...

Words used to label bus stops within bus stations.

Why is there so much variation of what the bus stops within bus stations and coach stations get called. We have at least six terms in use depending on the bus station or coach station: Bay Gate Platform Stance Stand Stop The terms "Bay" and "Stand" and "Stop" are all equally as common and in...

How many operators use Selective Door Opening ?

Interesting to hear. Never realised the 317s had that. I am presuming that was something that GN or FCC had retrofitted. Especially if it was only those units that had it. Did the rear four coaches get locked out of use until platform staff at Royston operated the switch? Or was it actually...

    Chiltern 165/0 refresh

Maybe it is just luck but all of the 165s that i have ridden on Chiltern recently have been in perfectly acceptable condition. They did not seem particularly knackered. They were a million times better condition than the appalling 1972 Stock and 1992 Stock trains. Single two coach 171s on their...

    Entry to the US

They stopped automatically stamping but they will always still stamp on request. They will even stamp their own citizens on request. You can just ask the immigration officer to stamp your passport and they always will. I always do this when i visit the USA as it gives me an easily accessible...

What stations have 2 platforms with 3 running tracks?

These stations are the most similar other ones that i can think of: Hatfield Stamford Brook Surbiton West Byfleet But unlike your examples these are all four track lines. But they have the same arrangement of three tracks between platforms like those three Scottish stations you mention. The...

SNCF - getting hold of PDF timetables etc

SNCF appear to have fixed it and the TER timetable pages for all 11 regions are working fine now. Still the same links that i posted before. So it seems like it was just a website bug. Also to add to my previous post it seems that TGV Lyria publish PDF timetables on their site...

Southern 377 Gatwick-Ashford ECS moves this week

Ah thank you for the link. Interesting to see that it has indeed happened in the past as well. I wonder if the 171s have ever gone via Sevenoaks and Orpington or via Sevenoaks and Swanley or via Maidstone East and Swanley before? I am wondering if the Edenbridge route has ever been shut at the...

How many operators use Selective Door Opening ?

Ah yes good point. I have always found this so odd. SWR went to the whole effort of fitting brand new door panels and fitting DDS on the 158s and 159s when they were refurbished in the late 2000s but yet only put DDS buttons at the unit ends. If you are going to go to the whole effort of fitting...
