Why is there so much variation of what the bus stops within bus stations and coach stations get called.
We have at least six terms in use depending on the bus station or coach station:
Bay
Gate
Platform
Stance
Stand
Stop
The terms "Bay" and "Stand" and "Stop" are all equally as common and in use at dozens of bus stations.
The terms "Gate" and "Platform" are quite rare and only used at a couple coach stations.
The term "Stance" is an odd one that seems to be used commonly in Scotland but is unheard of elsewhere.
I wonder where the term "Stance" came from. When i first saw this in Scotland i remember thinking that they must have misspellt "Stand" by accident. But it is an actual term. The only use of the word "Stance" i have heard of is to state your opinion or your position on something. I guess it is one of those unique Scottish words like "Outwith" and a few others.
My question is whether the use of so many terms to describe stops in British bus stations has always existed? Or was it more standardised if you go back decades ago before deregulation? I presume back then all the bus stations would have been owned by NBC (National Bus Company) and the wording was more standardised? I am just wondering if anyone knows the history of how so many terms came to be used?
