Trivia: Stations in other countries that have tracks with platforms on both sides?

The main railway station in Tallinn in Estonia has a unique setup where they have platforms on both sides of many tracks and the doors open on both sides. So you can board and alight on either side and even walk through the train from one platform to another. We have a couple of these in the UK...

What’s the least used station with a ticket office?

Crowhurst and Stonegate must be contenders. Very tiny rural stations. They are only open for a few hours in the morning but i am surprised that they never closed these ticket offices.

Countries with the fewest / no locomotive-hauled passenger services

Oh are they 100% locomotive hauled in Kosovo now? Last time i went they were majority locomotive hauled but still had those Fiat one coach DMUs from Sweden being used on two trains i went on. All of the photos that i can find since covid (so around 2020 and after) are locomotive hauled so maybe...

Countries with the fewest / no locomotive-hauled passenger services

Moldova has seen such a decrease in services. If you go back before covid there was at least four domestic services a day in each direction. So at least eight domestic journeys a day. Hardly anything now. Another related question i have for this thread is how many countries are still 100%...

Countries with the fewest / no locomotive-hauled passenger services

I thought that Macedonia had booked locomotive hauled workings. Macedonia only has 6x units (2x 411 EMUs plus 4x 711 DMUs) which is technically enough but is rather tight. Maybe it has changed but last time i was there they definitely had a few trains that were actually booked to be locomotive...

Nightt buses with different numbers but the same route

Yes i think combining the N12 and N14 as one coastal night bus from Brighton to Eastbourne on an hourly or half hourly route in each direction via the Peacehaven loop and Newhaven loop and Seaford loop would probably work much better. Also running it on Monday as well would be good especially...

Nightt buses with different numbers but the same route

Also the N25 is over 90% the same except for a longer routing around the university campuses. You also have the N1 N5 N14 N700 which mostly follow around 80% of the day routes but just take different routes at the outer ends. But yes as you so only the N7 and N12 are 100% the same as the day...

Longest length trains on preserved railways

I am sure i remember that the West Somerset Railway used to run very long trains on busy summer days? I think i recall 12 coaches (or at least something close to that length) were common at one point? Minehead has extremely long platforms. So they clearly had long trains in mind. No idea on the...

    Euston Departure Boards

Why do they need that massive tall wall put up just to dismantle the boards. That seems like a massive overkill. Surely just some simple temporary barriers (like what gets used for temporary queueing systems) would have been far cheaper and quicker to set up. But good to see them taken down. It...

What were the most/least successful, post millennium bus bodies in London?

How about the short version of the Borismaster (NBFL) buses. Only one was ever built. LTZ 1812 (ST812) is the vehicle. Certainly one of the rarest TFL buses. It surprises me as the slightly longer version had 1000 built but yet only 1 of the shorter length was built.

Stansted Express Website Booking - No Railcard option

It is exactly the same on the Luton Express website. No option to select a railcard. But yet if you go directly to the EMR website then you can.

Fan preferences for loco-hauled vs multiple-unit

I have always preferred multiple unit stock. That may be due to the fact that i grew up and have always lived or worked in Surrey or Sussex or Kent or Hampshire in the third rail regions so units have been the stock that i worked on and used all my life. It has always been very rare for me to...

Gautrain South Africa Class 301 Electrostar multiple units.

Thank you. I never noticed the unit number there before. Although i am looking at other photos now and oddly some do not seem to have any unit numbers on display anywhere. Some have unit numbers on the side where you posted. Some have unit numbers in very small font on the front at the bottom of...

Staffing arrangements of drivers and guards on mainline railtours.

Have any railtours ever run DOO before? Would it even be allowed? The only thing i can think is perhaps some of the multiple unit run railtours that operate before certain classes get withdrawn? Perhaps some of those were DOO services?

    Rare /Least Used Anne Announcements

I found a couple of old videos on youtube with some interesting ones. On this video at Manchester Piccadilly from 09:10 to 09:24 you can hear her say an "Arriva Trans Pennine" service: On this video at Manchester Piccadilly from 00:00 to 00:14 you can hear her say an "Arriva Trans Pennine"...

Gautrain South Africa Class 301 Electrostar multiple units.

Does anyone have the full unit numbers and carriage numbers of the Gautrain Class 301 Electrostar trains on the South African rail network? There are 24 units and there appears to be two different subclasses: • 19x 4car 301s for Commuter services. These have our class 376 seats in 3+2...

    Overlapping announcements

That still happens at quite a few TOCs stations today. GTR stations (Celia/Phil originally and now Anne/Matt). SWR stations (Celia/Phil originally and now Anne/Rodger). SE stations (Pauline/Mark originally and now Anne/Rob). They usually use a male voice on one platform and a female voice on the...

    Gatwick Airport station taxis

I find it quicker to walk to the end of the monorail island platform and use the stairs at the end. It is not signposted but if you have no luggage then this is easier. This saves waiting around for a lift. Sometimes that can be quite busy with a lot of people.

Countries with the fewest / no locomotive-hauled passenger services

I think all of Estonia and Latvia and Lithuania have no domestic locomotive hauled services now. Estonia and Latvia certainly have zero locomotive hauled trains at all. Lithuania has cross border locomotive hauled trains to Belarus and Poland and Russia but i do not think any domestic ones.

    Airports not served by rail

Yes there is a station there. Gary Airport railway station is about twenty minute walk from the airport terminal building. But the airport appears to only be used for private aeroplanes at the moment. So not much use with no scheduled flights. Interestingly the station is a request stop. It must...
