Passport prices to increase yet again from next month.

Are you sure that there actually any countries where having an ID card is mandatory? I know that in many countries it is mandatory to posess a legal form of ID but i have always understood that this meant you could choose to get either a passport or ID card. If you hold a passport then i would...

TRIVIA: Funky Not In Service Screens

The bus belonging to Guildford Depot of Stagecoach South was seen displaying this foreign language blind while not in service. I have no idea what language it is (likely some Indian or Bangladeshi or Pakistani language) or exactly what it says. I am guessing it says "Not In Service" but not...

Trivia: Furthest distance that you could travel for free on public transport in other countries.

What is the furthest distance that you could travel for free? So from end to end travelling on buses or trains or other public transport that is free? I am only talking about public transport that is free for all. So not free travel for pensioners and disabled and other similar offers. There...

Passport prices to increase yet again from next month.

Travelling abroad can be very cheap. Not everyone is wealthy or goes on expensive trips. You can go from Newhaven to Dieppe on the ferry for a day trip for only £31.00 single or £46.00 return which is cheaper than a day trip to London by train from many UK cities. A passport is also used as...

Passport prices to increase yet again from next month.

From next month (8th of April) the Passport Office are increasing the extortionate passport fees yet again. Passport Office Article: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-fees-for-passport-applications BBC News Article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czx7x7wy1e2o The new prices are...

Grand Central new Class 820 IET units.

Yes but it is still classified as a bi mode. The 801 just has one engine and the engine is less powerful and fuel tank is smaller compared to the 800 and 802 units. So it is only intended for short distances mainly in emergencies. The 801 is still a bi mode even if it does not normally operate...

Grand Central new Class 820 IET units.

The class 801 is a bi mode and is odd numbered. People always seem to forget that the class 801 are bi mode units. I doubt that odd numbers and even numbers of IET classes were intended to have anything to do with whether it was a bi mode or not.

Brighton & Hove / Metrobus Discussion

I wonder what route it would be merged with. The most likely one is probably the 21 i would guess. That is the most similar route and the 18 and 21 have been partly merged in the past under a different route number. Currently the 21 runs as the following routing: Old Steine - Saint Peters...

Grand Central new Class 820 IET units.

The article states that Grand Central are taking the remaining four 180s that are currently in storage. I presume that the 221s will get withdrawn and hopefully go to Cross Country once this happens. So it will be 11x 820s replacing 14x 180s meaning they will have three less units.

    West Wight Wanderer

I have never heard of that ticket. I would question whether it even still exists. There is no record of it in the fares data. It has probably been permanently scrapped (and it must have been very short lived and poorly publicised) but it is difficult to say for certain. I also note that both the...

Grand Central new Class 820 IET units.

Thank you for that. What an odd setup. I know many sites have paywalls but i have never heard of a site that lets you view it for free but only if you sign up. Why not just make visible for all. At least we can see the content of the article now. So the order is for 9x 820s but they will...

Grand Central new Class 820 IET units.

I can not find a thread for these so i thought it was worth starting one to discuss the construction and delivery and introduction of these units. It looks like the new Grand Central IET units have been given the Class 820 classification very recently...

    Kent Rover becoming online only

Has anyone checked whether they have been removed from the TVMs at London Overground stations yet. I presume that they probably have but it would be good to get confirmation. That was always a very useful option for buying a Kent Rover ticket.

Trivia: Unusual fare and ticketing quirks on public transport in other countries.

Another slightly similar one to the Sandbanks ferry are the Kitsap County ferry routes in Washington which charge different prices for different directions. Any ferry journey Eastbound to Seattle is USD2.00. Any ferry journey Westbound from Seattle is USD14.00. So it costs seven times the price...

Trivia: Unusual fare and ticketing quirks on public transport in other countries.

Some countries in Oriental Asia have ticket barriers that are always left in the open position and only shut if you try to enter without inserting a ticket. Japan and South Korea have these and possibly a few other countries. It seems a very odd and confusing way to do things but i suppose they...

Trivia: Unusual fare and ticketing quirks on public transport in other countries.

That is also becoming very common all over the USA as more operators introduce contactless. Many bus operators have decided to charge contactless fares as cash fares rather than as cheaper smartcard fares. I am not sure why. I can think of twelve cities in the USA where paying with contactless...

    Unusual multiple unit couplings

There was an occassion of a Northern 150 unit coupled to an FTPE 170 unit about fifteen years ago: One of them had broken down a few miles away from Leeds station and the other ended up rescuing it and pulling it the few files in to Leeds station. Formations of a 150 coupled to a 170 are not...

    Unusual multiple unit couplings

Those were very common right up until about five years ago when the Pacers were withdrawn. Northern would couple Pacers to anything. I saw 142+158 formations happen many times. You could see 142+150 or 142+153 or 142+155 or 152+156 or 142+158 with Northern in passenger service. The formations of...

Has any bus operator in the UK ever offered SMS tickets.

Does anyone know if any UK bus operator has operator ever offered SMS tickets in any point in the past? This method is very popular in Mainland European countries. France and Belgium in particular use it extensively in almost all towns and cities and have done so for years. Some of the Eastern...

Direct Bromley North to London Cannon Street services on 17th May 2026

Could they use the 707 units instead. Either a 10 car if the platforms at Bromley North are long enough or a 5 car if they are not. I forget the length but a single unit definitely fits. They have onboard DOO monitors on the 707 units (unlike the 375/376/465/466 which rely on platform monitors)...
