UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

They can't yet operate them independently (left or right side) but have the hazards working fine for what BMW calls 'parking to get a pack of fags mode'.

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

Many Chinese car models got their own discount, suggesting China has the margins to play with. Yes, the UK and EU could start to try and be more like the USA and impose hefty tariffs, but the real loser then is the consumer. The likes of VW seem to be scared that they've been left behind in the...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

There were many 1Gxx services created to run as shuttles from Kings Lynn to Cambridge?

UK switching to electric vehicles discussion

I don't think any targets or deadlines are going to matter because more and more people are buying EVs, and unlikely to return to ICE afterwards. EVs are getting ever cheaper, with more and more second hand bargains, and ranges will increase with new battery technology. I'm not sure if and when...

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Broken rail between Hitchin and Arlesey, so services having to be thinned out for most or all of the evening (trains also unable to call at Hitchin northbound).

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

Yes, you're right that sometimes it is the King's Cross train that runs fast and kicks people out, and depending on how late it may be impossible to cross for the Moorgate service that ran as booked. I'd guess that most people aren't changing though for a stopper and just want one of the...

Doors didn’t open at Finsbury Park and was issued a witness statement receipt

Yes, that's a fair point but the door lights illuminate and there's a loud audible alert on the opening side. If people aren't paying attention or have noise cancelling earbuds in then there's only so much you can do. Would they hear an announcement saying the doors will open on the xxx hand...

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

Yes, but that's not something to worry about most of the time. The inners have to be very late for not to call orders to be issued, especially if running fast just means being stuck behind something else. Yes it does happen, but I would still change at Hatfield - and by all means check if...

Doors didn’t open at Finsbury Park and was issued a witness statement receipt

To clarify, the doors can only open on one side depending on the platform the train arrives on. There will never be a situation where a train on platform 2 will open the doors onto platform 3, for example. (Extreme emergencies or train faults aside).

    Thoughts on the Trump presidency

JD Vance has zero charisma so if the right is currently eating itself as they all throw each other under the bus, what's it going to be like with him in charge? There was a time I thought perhaps he had a bit more discretion and could at least act more statesman like, but I'm not so sure with...

    Stevenage Lifts to get gateline

I heard from someone who works for an agency that they'll be having more staff to be at two new gatelines upstairs. I don't know when they're going in, but I've thought for ages that there's enough room. Perhaps the one immediately opposite the main gates can be controlled remotely but the one...

    Stevenage Lifts to get gateline

Mod Note: Posts #1 - #6 originally in this thread. The lifts at Stevenage are getting gatelines.

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

If you're changing to a GN inner then you absolutely should stay on the train to Hatfield instead of alighting at WGC and crossing over. This is because if the King's Cross service is delayed, you can miss the Moorgate train - even though the Moorgate train will often be held on the flyover and...

Regular Thameslink disruption: what could be done to improve performance and resilience?

I am not sure the solution is to run fewer trains, although it is often said that the railway would run better with no customers.. Maybe you're on to something, but I think people actually want more frequent services so they can just turn up and go when things are running okay.

    December 2025 East Coast Timetable

Not sure if it's permanent or just today, but there's now an extended dwell time for trains at WGC going north - of 4 minutes, which it seems can even be 5 minutes if the train arrives a bit early. That's a long time for a train not to move, and where people onboard start to wonder what's going...

Regular Thameslink disruptions over a week

When things go wrong, TOCs will need to respond quickly and so there are predetermined plans that can be implemented relatively quickly, and with people knowing and understanding that they're following 'plan xx' so as not to cause further confusion. It's important that everyone is on the same...

Wind Power and UK Energy Use

The wholesale cost of battery cells has plummeted again so future batteries for homes (or mass energy storage systems) will continue to get cheaper - meaning that solar and battery installs will become cheaper. Now it's mostly the scaffolding and labour costs that make an install expensive and...

    Supermarkets discussion

Imagine the fun and games when dynamic pricing comes in. I don't know how trials are going in the UK but it's a thing elsewhere (albeit those places don't have prices advertised on the shelves and instead rely on a price list that changes and you must check). Once more eInk shelf tags come, I...

Companies That You Expect to Disappear Soon

I'd probably have a beer to celebrate the downfall of a pretty nasty company (albeit the founder not being so involved now, but I believe still on the board). It wouldn't be Brewdog beer of course.

    Thoughts on the Trump presidency

They'll enter your profile IDs and email addresses into software that will scan for your posts and mentions (and, who knows, maybe in the case of Gmail or Microsoft email addresses, they could just give full access to your email posts). At this time, I feel the US Government can and is doing...
