Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Does sound like an overreaction. If there are absolutely zero trains then by all means get people back to the booking hall to give information there (and get people onto buses or into taxis) but why say there will be no trains for the rest of the day? Do staff have no faith that a service can be...

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

Good point, but that surely needs to be fixed also - and it would seem poor to create more lines that have Oyster end part way through the route.

Experiences of service recovery (or lack of) on GTR Great Northern

Not sure why there was the assumption no trains will run for the rest of the day (similar was said Saturday just gone, but the service was mostly restored after 1930 until the end of service), but it's clearly going to be disrupted for some time - and like any incident that happens around this...

    How might Oyster be replaced?

Hopefully phone snatching will reduce now Google (Android) and Apple have introduced security features in software to detect the forces of a phone being snatched/grabbed, immediately locking the phone*. While some phones are stolen for parts, one key reason this theft was so popular was getting...

Regulated Rail fares in England frozen until March 2027

It depends if you think making it cheaper for people to get around, for work or leisure, is good for the overall economy or not - as well as getting people out of cars, which reduces congestion and can help in many ways (improving bus reliability, reducing pollution before all cars are electric...

    How might Oyster be replaced?

If that can be done, it reduces a lot of the need to educate customers of the change at all (given the change is only a positive, not a negative, so those who aren't aware of it working further out aren't losing anything) and can save quite a bit on not having to get people to replace them.

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

They must surely have an extended grace period as they change the marketing to warn people of the delay. I assume stations on Greater Anglia got posters saying contactless was being extended, as has happened on TLGN stations. They must now surely sell a ticket and help the customer get a refund...

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

It needs to switch to a system that can scale beyond the 15/16 zones that Oyster had, and move the account management off the card. Basically, become like an ITSO smart card and calculate the same as that, or contactless. TfL can retain the Oyster branding and market it with season tickets or...

Bus stop information 'causing misery' for bus commuters

Google seems to be very poor with a lot of transport options, and I've noticed recently that it asks you to report a delay yourself - so I guess they're looking at using crowdsourced data to show delays where they can't accurately do so themselves for whatever reason.

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

When contactless extends in a week or so, and indeed when it extends further again in the future, TfL is surely going to need to find a way to clearly inform customers the differences between Oyster and contactless validity. Already far too many people reach the end of the contactless area with...

Bus stop information 'causing misery' for bus commuters

And that's somewhat unfair. You can't easily find an alternative, so must put up with it. Meanwhile anyone else who has a choice, takes another option, and that's less income for the bus operator - which puts the bus service in jeopardy through lack of patronage. I am not too worried about a...

Bus stop information 'causing misery' for bus commuters

People can cope with poor punctuality if they know about it. If I see my bus is delayed 15 minutes, I can make a decision based on that information. If the bus was cancelled and isn't coming, and the next one is an hour (or longer) away then I am sat there waiting for nothing. I could decide to...

Great Northern - Northern City Line to TFL?

That's a lot to take in, but speed reading through it still seems to me like there's no real need for TfL to take over. The main incentive is improving the Hertford Loop and building a new station to cope with a huge development at Crews Hill. Surely TfL could work closely with GB Railway to...

Bus stop information 'causing misery' for bus commuters

Herts County Council has installed lots of very small colour LCD displays at the tiniest of bus stops, but missed out on some rather major ones on housing estates. I guess I should have added to my rant that bus stops need to show information as well as expecting people to use an app on their...

Changes needed to mitigate against the effects of Thameslink core failures

Whatever the issue, my understanding is that trains had to proceed on sight because it couldn't be established where trains were. You can only imagine how much that would limit throughput, such that the standard plans to only run certain trains and turn others back/divert into KGX etc would have...

Doors didn’t open at Finsbury Park and was issued a witness statement receipt

CCTV is usually held for 30 days or so, so you'll likely be relying on it having been reported by someone else as an operational incident. I find it hard to believe a train stops at Finsbury Park and nobody else noticed the doors not working - either on the train itself, or on the platform. I...

Bus stop information 'causing misery' for bus commuters

And we need to change this way of thinking. God help us if Reform gets into power, because the current buses will be decimated even more I'm sure. The councils where Reform have taken power are already trying to undo cycle lane investment and I'm sure some have even said (which of course...

Bus stop information 'causing misery' for bus commuters

Yes, let us imagine. Because public transport should receive the funding necessary to provide a basic service. A bus that is road worthy, accessible, has information onboard and passengers wanting to use the bus also get the required information. NONE of those things should be optional. I know...

Bus stop information 'causing misery' for bus commuters

There can be a bigger delay than using a native bus operator app, meaning the bus you're tracking is already quite far ahead of the on-screen icon. That can mean missing a bus if you thought it was running late, but that in itself isn't a massive issue because I use the tracking mostly to check...
