London to Guildford - queries and fares are too high

Sometimes LNR is faster than Avanti between Euston and Milton Keynes. Between Stevenage and London LNER's faster trains have cheaper fares than GTR's slower trains!

    SWR ticket service check

This isn’t a normal ticket check by RPIs. It’s a ticketless travel survey undertake on behalf of the DfT. The staff work in a similar way to RPIs but they aren’t RPIs. All they do is note details of whether a valid ticket is held and if they don’t what the contravention is. The output of the...

Expansion of LNER 70-min flex trial area ("Simpler Fares")

There will be some significant fares increases as a result of Project Oval, especially for leisure travel. Looking at my local line, Stevenage to London. Current fares are: Anytime Day Return £28.90 Off Peak Day Return £22.80 - no evening restrictions on the return Weekend Super Off Peak Day...

    Help with unbookable route

Depending on the tickets held you could all get the 07:46 LNR service from Euston and alight at Rugby at 08:42. Your friends could then continue to Manchester by catching the 08:47 Avanti (which is the train you wanted to catch at Euston).

    Reading to Gatwick, via Contactless

I've had a couple of these surveys in the last week. One on a Chiltern train, the other on a GWR service that was first stop Reading. My view is that the questions are writtten in such a way that you're going to say you're in favour of contactless.

    SWR ticket service check

This'll be a ticketless travel survey. They happen every quarter and are one of the main KPIs on which TOCs are measured by the DfT.

Birmingham International car park - is it safe?

I've flewn out of Birmingham airport a couple of times in the last year, for a day trip or overnight trip. Both times I left my car in the station car park without incident. Security was good on both occasions.

What happens if phone dies during journey, and you have the physical card that is held on the phone?

I agree, although with the right phone back-ups in place you should be able to access things like contacts by logging in to your account from another device. I do agree with keeping some useful telephone numbers somewhere useful, especially on a foreig trip. This is something I normally do...

    December 2025 East Coast Timetable

I don't think LNER will have a choice! I remember an incident a few years back where there was major disruption. A LNER train got announced as 1st stop Stevenage and it became very busy. By the time it left it was like a tube train - proper crush loaded both in 1st and standard. The Train...

What happens if phone dies during journey, and you have the physical card that is held on the phone?

I knew it had happened straight away. A gang caused a commotion on the platform as the train pulled in. They pushed my partner as we boarded the train and someone threw a coat over my shoulder. I turned round and shouted at these people for pushing and checked my partner was ok. The train...

    December 2025 East Coast Timetable

I caught the 18:12 GTR train from Kings Cross to Stevenage this evening. It was an 8-car 700 and left KGX with standing passengers. Based on previous experience the 18:33 LNER would leave with some standing in the vestibules (buit not in the aisles) until SVG The 18:42 GTR from KGX to SVG would...

What happens if phone dies during journey, and you have the physical card that is held on the phone?

To add to my earlier post: Before I'd managed to report the cards as stolen (I didn't hang around doing this - as soon as I got out of the Metro I was on the phone) they had been used to make contactless purchases, all the transactions appeared to be for pairs of trainers. One of my card...

What happens if phone dies during journey, and you have the physical card that is held on the phone?

A couple of years ago I had my wallet stolen on the Paris Metro. My bank cards, cash, TVG and Eurostar tickets were in it. Thankfully my phone wasn’t stolen. That meant I could report the theft to the banks and get the cards cancelled (much easier on via the banking apps than calling). I logged...

SWR taxi refund - is there hope?

I think you'll need to send a concise email to SWR customer services and see what they say.

What happens if phone dies during journey, and you have the physical card that is held on the phone?

It's inadvisable to only ever carry one payment method. By all means use a smartphone but I'd at least carry a physical card or some cash (perhaps both). You can easily keep some bank hotes inside your phone case. You could also keep a bank card there but you'd need to disable its contactless...

Glasgow to London - break of journey via Manchester

Just to clarify that break of journey is prohibited with an Off Peak Single and the outward portion of an Off Peak Return between Glasgow and London Euston (restriction code 3A). There is no break of journey restriction on the return portion of a London Terminals to Glasgow Off Peak Return. An...

    FairFare – 26p/mile with a £60 universal railcard

Appreciate you can’t yield manage those trains, I just used it as an example of a lightly loaded service becoming very busy later on in its journey. I’m not sure every single long distance train needs to be, or can realistically be 100% full.
