    Budapest

For Hungarian craft beer, i'd recommend Eleszto off tuzolto utca near Corvin-negyed on line M3 , Lehuto on hollo utca in the centre or Szimpla Kert on Kazincsky Utca, also in the central area. Hopfanatic on Hunyadi ter near vorosmarty utca (M1) had some great beers last year but it may be...

If you could travel back in time, what service would you like to travel on?

July, 1981. Darlington to York HST then York to Peterborough Deltic hauled 'sweeper' train, Mk1 compartment near the front. 11 year old train lover (me) with my dad (tough ex Para, not an enthusiast, but happy to put up with trains to take his son out for the day, dearly missed) on my first...

    Prague to Pilsen

Another vote from me for the brewpub in the scrapyard at Beroun, Berounsky Medved. Class beer, decent grub and a novel location. You should see some freight at Plzen, i'm not really into the freight side of things but I've seen car trains and other unidentified stuff (maybe grain for the...

    Northern Rail trip

Last one I did (starting by bus from Peterlee) was Durham to Newcastle, Newcastle-Carlisle, Carlisle to Lancaster via Barrow, Lancaster- Morecambe - Leeds, Leeds to York then back to Hartlepool using Grand Central. Easily doable and well worth shelling out for the York Hartlepool section.

Trivia: How could station names fit the ideas for "simplification" of English?

Some North east ones:- Prudhoe= Prudder Durham= Durram Grosmont=growmont Sleights= Slights Ruswarp= Ruzarp Pegswood= Pigsurd (you have to say this fast to sound correct) Plus one where lots of folk add a letter- there is no 'r' between the a and s in Newcastle.... Another possible north south...

    Leipzig and Nuremberg

In Leipzig, the Stasi museum 'in der runden ecke' is a worthwhile visit, a fascinating insight into the old communist lifestyle and the start of the downfall of the wall. In the city centre the museum of the DDR is good too. If you like booze, a handful of bars specialize in an oddity in...

    I've got a dilemma for 2015's trips...

I'm sort of with Fowler9 on this one. Maybe not Poland, but use your cash to head over to Europe and sample the very last of the 'REAL' traditional trains. The last place in the world that you can safely experience loud diesels, howling electrics, half drop window stock, compartments and easy to...

    Travelling to Budapest

When you buy your ticket from MAV, they give you a ten digit reference number. Take this number with you. Key in the number at a ticket machine in any major Hungarian station eg Budapest Keleti. It's really easy, there isn't any queueing and the machines have an English option. There is there is...

    Beer

I'm not quite certain if Eire counts on this thread, but Guinness certainly used rail a few years ago. The sight of a long freight stocked with pallets of guinness barrels heading west out of Dublin certainly left a lasting impression in this thirsty rail enthusiasts mind :-)

What is the best way to train it from London to Thurso?

Ah cheers Matt didn't realise that. Makes sense to connect Stirling with London rather than Kirkaldy which is well enough served by Aberdeen services. As an aside to the OP, the run up the coast to Aberdeen is quite nice scenic journey too!

What is the best way to train it from London to Thurso?

Are there any Inverness- Edinburgh trains that don't cross the bridge? I thought they all went that way?

What is the best way to train it from London to Thurso?

If you are only coming once, then I agree with 30907 above about taking the coach Fort William to Inverness. Time allowing, this is how i'd do it- Travel early London to Leeds. From Leeds take a train over the magnificent Settle line to Carlisle. Then it's West coast main line to Glasgow. From...

    Travelling to Budapest

If you do the Railjet Budapest to Zurich direction the 'mav start' website is happily coming up with saver tickets for 39 euro 2nd class, 59 euro 1st (worth it IMO). HTH

    Tyne and Wear Metro

There is an hourly bus linking the Airport and Four lane Ends interchange (353). It takes a convoluted route but you will see bits of North Tyneside that most tourists miss......from South Hylton the buses only run back into Sunderland. Pubwise DarloRich has it well covered buit I'd also...

    obb ticket collection - dispute

I don't know of a country in Europe that does carry neighbouring countries rail ticket machines. (Arriva in north Germany perhaps?) I'm well aware of that, as regular euro rail travellers are, but is it really fair to expect non regulars to know that? Surely the conditions on his print at home...

Runaway dog decided to catch train to Manchester

Ok, last one I promise---maybe she was looking for the LICKey incline?

    obb ticket collection - dispute

I know it's the norm in Europe, but I don't agree that it's logical ( as stated by OBB) not to find a ticket machine in a major international station abroad, in particular one with regular OBB services. After all, there are plenty of eg british airways service desks in foreign airports? I'd...

Runaway dog decided to catch train to Manchester

Perhaps she was carrying a Rover ticket? :-) (Coat and hat on....)

Lorry nearly hit by train after ice skid

The tarmac itself actually ends a few yards the other side of the crossing. The road is a vehicular dead end that only serves two farms so i'd imagine the usage wouldn't justify it. Having said that, after this incident who knows! PS is the line speed really 125mph at that point? (It's about...

    Odd/Funny named Villages

Always liked Great Fryup in North Yorkshire- Not far from Egton too :-) Shilbottle (as mentioned earlier) generally has the L on the nearby roadsigns crossed with black marker to make a t......similar abuse happens to the n on road signs for Snitterton near Rothbury. Wideopen and...
