ITV Granada said:
British Transport Police have helped a canine commuter find her way home, after an unexpected journey.

Princess, a four-year-old Staffordshire Terrier, escaped from her back garden in Rochdale on Friday, 2nd January, and headed to Castleton station where she hopped on board a train to Manchester.

Princess disembarked at Manchester Victoria, where station staff handed her over to PC Christopher O’Connor and PCSO Lee Howard.

PC O'Connor tweeted asking for help in finding her owners, and Manchester Dog's Trust scanned her microchip to try and find her home address.

After a bit of detective work and following of leads the Hughes family came forward to claim Princess.

Amanda Hughes said: “I knew she’d got a train into town within 40 minutes of her going missing. I’d posted it on my Facebook account and someone replied saying they’d spotted her on Twitter and Facebook.

"They said they were sure it was Princess but I thought it’s just not something she would do. We don’t live far from the station, but we always walk her in the other direction so how she found her way there and then jumped on a train is a mystery but she is a bit of a character.”

PC Christopher O’Connor who, along with PCSO Howard, escorted Princess to safety after her adventure said: “She’s a lovely dog and she was a real pleasure to deal with, she was so affectionate and friendly. This was definitely one of our nicer jobs, we got a great deal of satisfaction from seeing her get home safely.

“It’s great to think that, thanks to a lot of teamwork with colleagues at Northern Rail and Greater Manchester Police, there was a happy ending.”

Princess is now safely home and has a new microchip, to help find her if she takes a day trip again.

She must have heard that dogs can travel for free. ;)

Wasn't a 153 (Dogbox) she boarded by any chance:D. Time to collect my coat perhaps?

I heard that she was going to catch the next ATW service to the North Wales coast in a bid to catch the WAG express...

(I'll leave now.)

One good reason why I had my Jack Russell microchip, she once boarded the 1902 to Cardiff at Gobowen Station slipping her lead, one call from me its going to Cardiff dogs home soon had her back on the platform, stronger leash now:)

With the WAG service being operated with top and tail locomotives :)

Cheers

Adam

Unfortunately its more bland now, WG express does not have the same mutation,"Gerald the Business" is more appropriate, I enjoyed the Wag Express,how WG Ministers hated the name.

Apparently she was prevented from going further than the gateline at Manchester Victoria as her ticket had a K9 restriction code.

I know....I'm going.

I hope Princess paw-sed for a few moments before boarding, to ensure she got on the correct train. Had she got the wrong one, she could have ended up in the dog house...

I'm surprised an RPI didn't give the dog a penalty fare for not having a valid payment method.

Good job it didn't get on a tram, I actually had no idea they weren't allowed until I just read this article: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/metrolink-agrees-launch-consultation-over-8453619

Metrolink bosses have bow-wowed [groan] to public pressure and launched a consultation over allowing dogs on trams.

The current bye-law prohibiting pooches has existed since the service launch in 1992.

It states that, other than assistance dogs or pets being taken to the PDSA in Old Trafford, no animals are allowed onboard.

Bosses say it’s in place for health and safety reasons but after a deluge of demands from dog-lovers, they have opened up the issue for public debate.

There is a link to a survey at http://www.tfgm.com/surveys/Pages/Dogs-on-trams/default.htm which says:

At the moment only certain dogs are allowed to travel on trams - guide dogs, hearing dogs, or cats or dogs going to the Old Trafford PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals). There is no charge for this. No changes would be made to these rules.

The proposal is that other dogs would be allowed on trams if they:

  1. were on a lead;
  2. had a muzzle, or were in a suitable carrier;
  3. are charged a child fare;
  4. only travel at off peak times (i.e. 0930-1600 and after 1830 on weekdays, anytime at weekends), and;
  5. did not take up a seat.

You can vote "Yes - but disagree with conditions proposed" then it asks more questions like which of the conditions you disagree with.
