Looks like a pair may be on 1010 LST to Stansted...Tiger reporting 8 coaches.

RIP Great western 125mph.... (IETs to have speed limiter automatically set)

Yes. Drivers on suburban routes run closely behind other trains and are therefore running constantly on caution signals causing the AWS to need constant resetting. Wasnt this habitual resetting found to have been the cause of some accidents ? Didn't TPWS safeguard that risk?

    Class 317 withdrawals.

Tiger reporting 8 coaches on the 1641 Liverpool St to Hertford East service. 317s not dead yet.

We do have KVB at St Pancras International to enforce the speed limits there. I'm not aware it is detrimental to driving..but there isn't much room for error if a driver does roll in there slightly too fast.

RIP Great western 125mph.... (IETs to have speed limiter automatically set)

This thread has identified a number of issues - some maybe good for a seperate thread. 1. Is speed set a help or a hinderance to train driving - among other tools - DAS etc? 2. Has health and safety got so pedantic that train driving as a skill is being 'dumbed down' by an increasingly...

How many years does GW ATP have in it? Did I read somewhere that Chiltern's system is now obsolete?

RIP Great western 125mph.... (IETs to have speed limiter automatically set)

Am I right in believing a limiter was not required on GWR due to ATP protection - but probably because the IET was procured by DfT, any change to the ECML fleet has to be mirrored across the whole GWR fleet? And of course the 802's which were not part of the same contract require the same...

RIP Great western 125mph.... (IETs to have speed limiter automatically set)

The problem with this is that any significant overspeed - say 10km/h or 5 or 6mph over any speed limit - is potentially a safety issue. In the case of TPE, we don't know what might have happened had the driver encountered double yellows approaching a junction at those sorts of speeds - would...

RIP Great western 125mph.... (IETs to have speed limiter automatically set)

Yes, the electric sections of the GWML are already protected adequately by ATP. On diesel, the IET's need to be going downhill to reach 125mph never mind 145! As I understand it this will be a 'soft' limiter that stops the train accelerating beyond 200 km/h even if full power is being applied...

RIP Great western 125mph.... (IETs to have speed limiter automatically set)

Wasn't it in South Korea where they lifted the speed limit of their trains from 300kph to 305kph - after passengers complained that their trains were not going running consistently at 300 kph? Anyway getting back to IET, it does seem a knee-jerk reaction - especially as train and track have to...

    Class 317 withdrawals.

I'm sure other factors come into play - such as servicing / maintenance etc. There comes a point where everything is geared up for the 720's at the depots - and trying to keep a handful of 317's on a rapidly emptying parts bin becomes challenging. And let's not forget they were supposed to have...

    Class 317 withdrawals.

Class 720 reliability is improving according to Modern Railways TIN watch. GA seem more interested in getting the new fleet going. There were no farewells for the Class 90's or Class 360's. I would imagine future publicity events will be focused on a 'faster' timetable.

    Nicely spotted ..

    Class 317 withdrawals.

I wouldn't rule out the odd 317 working or two in the coming weeks...but it is looking ominous now! How long before driver licence for them runs out due to not driving them for a while?
