Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

I travelled Eus to LIV return on an 11-car running to 80x timings. Quite a few slowings for TSR's, so the 390 was driven at normal pace and just about managed to arrive on LIV on time. The return journey was disrupted by late running LNWR service delaying departure from Crewe by 4 mins - pathed...

GwR HSTs to be stood down

Acceleration is more than adequate on dry rails - though still struggling to match an IET from 0 to 30mph - they are much faster above that speed. Adhesion appears to be an issue in the wet in many places. Also HST brakes are less responsive than units ..which means the units (15x, IET) can...

    Class 321 storage/scrapping

Claaa 321 Units 313, 322 and 326 still in service on a 12- car formation formed 1Y20 and 1Y47 this afternoon. Most likely the 1732 to Colchester Town

Greater Anglia Bombardier Aventras (Class 720): Technical discussion and introduction

Looks like a pair of 720s on the 1830 Liverpool Street to Norwich. Is that usual?

Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

Clearly the 745's have not yet reached the reliability figures that the previous Class 90/ mk3 sets did. Though Modern Railways reliability figures suggest the Class 745/1 ' Stansted' sets struggle for reliability more than the 745/0. Not sure if that is infrastructure or service pattern related.

Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

Seems to make sense. Even 2 x 4 car 755s can be pretty full on those diagrams

Disruption - running fast to make up time

I was on an Elizabeth line service delayed at Shenfield departing 10 late. No stops skipped to try and make it to the core slot on time despite the following service also being late and running immediately behind. The driving was equally relaxed. No press -on style. Therefore arrival at...

Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

Are the 755s still being diagrammed on Liverpool Street services? If so..was it the 755s that failed yesterday at Ingatestone or a 745?

Scotrail HSTs - 4-5 years in

Modern Railways reports plans are approved for replacement of the wheel slide protection and fitment of dual variable rate sanders on the HSTs...no word on timeline for that.

    WCML current running times

It is a shame considering the millions spent and years of disruption upgrading the line for 125mph tilt to wind up with journey times no faster than the legacy 110mph non- tilt stock - albeit capacity has been improved. I guess it will help sell HS2 to punters.

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

390's power setting depends on individual drivers preferences. I have met drivers who claim they always use 'boost' mode - railhead conditions permitting. Off the mark, a GWR class 800/802 set can start slightly quicker than a 221, but for a very short distance before a 221 romps away (on all...

Progress on Avanti West Coast's 805/807s Hitachi AT300 sets

Makes sense as no more than 90mph required on the North Wales run from Crewe using diesel mode - but the lower rating could be a handicap if there are any issues in electric mode and it has to continue on diesel along the WCML. It will be interesting to see if timings in Wales are extended...

    WCML Trent Valley upgrade

While the North end of the Trent Valley stretch of WCML is 4 tracked and 100mph+ on both the fast and slow lines..the southern stretch is only 3 tracks with slow lines limited to 75mph. Is there any evidence to suggest this southern section is proving to be a performance / reliability...

Greater Anglia Class 755s (Regional Trains)

The Stadlers have really transformed East Anglia services to Ipswich and beyond. I always choose a 745 service when travelling beyond Colchester. The 745's are an improved travelling environment for mainline passengers - easier access onto and through the train, more seats brighter cleaner more...

    Class 317 withdrawals.

I'm not sure genuine enthusiasts would vandalise a train - even for a bit of memorabilia. That sort of behaviour may well put paid to a 315 or 321 farewell tour unless a path can be found to run a 'special' with specific tickets bought for each leg of the journey. To be fair the 317's have been...

RIP Great western 125mph.... (IETs to have speed limiter automatically set)

Commom sense suggests it would have been better to have set a limiter up at 128mph at that time rather than setting the train to report breaches of that limit. If we are talking in metric..then a 205 km/h limiter for nornally signalled lines and a 230 km/h limiter when used under ETCS should...
