Mk5A coaching stock and associated Class 68 locomotives to Chiltern Railways (including speculation/suggestions)

Although some services are a lot longer in the peak. Certainly the 07.05 from Banbury to Marylebone is 8 coaches mid-week. And from where I'm sitting on platform 2 waiting for my Birmingham train, it looks very full even at that length. That's going to be fun if down to 5 carriages.

Will the TOC part of station announcements disappear under GBR?

I was on a Southern service the other day from Southampton to Swanwick, and the on-train announcements had had the Southern bit removed. Just said "this is the (slight pause) service to Brighton"

    Where are the ticket inspectors?

I travelled from Banbury to Swanwick and return yesterday and didn't get my ticket checked once. The train manager on the XC part did walk through with his counting device once, but that was it. I used to use XC quite a lot a few years ago, normally to Leeds. Then, XC would almost always...

    Where are the ticket inspectors?

I'm normally going in the Banbury to Birmingham direction, and there was a step change about 18 months ago. Before then, the barriers at Banbury were often open in the mornings, and it was rare for them to be in operation in the evenings. Nowadays it's normal for a ticket inspection to take...

    Escalators @ Snow Hill?

    Shock - it's working again.

    Pushbikes on trains

I had a friend who did just that. He had 2 bikes, one he'd leave at Banbury station, and the second he left outside Oxford station.

Chiltern abandoning West Midlands on Sunday

agree, i find this a very strange decision.

    XC Voyager Refurbishment

I think is backed up by ticket numbers. I'm sure I read somewhere the amount of ticket sales to Liverpool dropped significantly on XC following the removal of direct trains.

Stations managed by an "odd" TOC

To add to your list, I believe Kings Sutton has a few more Great Western services than Chiltern, but the station is managed by Chiltern.

Stations managed by an "odd" TOC

Likewise, Birmingham Moor Street being Chiltern Managed when there are a lot more WMT trains stopping there.

Poor treatment of customers by the railway industry

Doesn't this go to the old problem, some people deliberately try it on, and some people make an honest mistake - then we're down to how the railway companies react.

Almost got trapped inside Leamington Spa station for the night

This sounds horrific. So out of interest, how many staff are left on a station like Leamington Spa at that time in the morning? Knowing my local station, there are (illegal) ways to get out of the station by walking over the track etc, so a bit concerning of the safety issues of desperate...

    Marylebone

Marylebone - Banbury trains (Class 115 DMUs) rang alongside Paddington - Birmingham New St. trains for years. Marylebone - Banbury trains ran every hour, or sometimes every 2 hours from memory. Paddington - Birmingham trains were generally hourly. Most went Reading - Oxford - Banbury -...

Shakespearean Sonnet rail tour - did it run?

Great thanks - that’s what wrong footed me. I didn’t realise it was as separate trains.

Shakespearean Sonnet rail tour - did it run?

Hi. One of my work colleagues mentioned this rail tour today. They patiently waited at Banbury but it never turned up. I’ve checked on RTT but can’t find it. I thought rail tours were on RTT? Thanks.

Chiltern disruption near Marylebone (20 February 2025)

Well, I was on the 1H66 which is going through to Marylebone. They put on an extra train from Banbury 1H67 I think. Lots of announcements on the 1H66 saying there will a train starting from Banbury with lots of space. Even routed 1H66 onto platform 2 so cross platform interchange onto...

Why does the current design of Curzon Street leave the station so under-utilised and disconnected?

Surely the Moor Street/New Street walk isn't that bad. A few hundred yards, with pedestrian crossings across the 2 roads.

Chiltern Rail Smartcard - Ticket Didn't Load

I use a Chiltern Smartcard and they can be a bit random. Whenever I've had a problem with the Smartcard not opening barriers, I've shown the person at the gates my Smartcard and booking confirmation and they've always let me through. Only time it was a problem was at Birmingham Snow Hill...

Cambridge to King's Lynn Electrification - Gathering Resources

Great thanks - so portals as opposed to individual power masts on each side of the track.
