    Should TOCs abandon Weekend First?

Agreed. They would need to conduct a customer behaviour study to estimate the revenue impact of making changes. :)

Please don't walk through first class

The richest person I know, founder of one of the largest employment agencies in the UK, always travels STD on the train and Y on the plane. :o

Please don't walk through first class

I mean to say that as an East Coast 1ST pax I have never had cause to be disturbed by people coming through from STD (although I have seen them) and I have never heard an announcement like that mentioned up thread. :)

    Should TOCs abandon Weekend First?

Ah ... my perspective is revenue boosts for the TOC rather than improvements for pax. If anything, my proposal might make things more complex for pax because people wanting to travel in 1ST at the weekend would be unable to buy the walk up fare and WF supplement. :)

Please don't walk through first class

I think it would have been best just to say nothing and ignore them. Once I was flying business class from Heathrow to Prague wearing a rugby shirt and at the priority boarding stage the man collecting the boarding card actually said "you don't look like a business class passenger" to me! I...

Please don't walk through first class

I note with interest that this is not an issue I have ever come across on East Coast, NXEC or GNER. The ability to get off first can be extremely useful when you want to be first in the taxi queue!

    Should TOCs abandon Weekend First?

Interesting discussion ... always good to cause a little controversy! :D *** My main route is East Coast and I do see plenty of passengers in 1ST, even more than 50% sometimes, who appear to be leisure travellers. However I would still expect that the proportion of revenue from business...

Travelling first class on a standard ticket

The justification (not that I would agree with it) is that the cost of audit and management time to prove that 1ST is cheaper than STD in a particular case does not justify the saving.

    Should TOCs abandon Weekend First?

Now that the Advance fare structure has matured it seems to me that the Weekend First upgrade is no longer relevant. The benefits of terminating the offer potentially include: i) upsell at time of booking from pax currently buying STD+WF supplement, improving cash-flow and eliminating risk...

Travelling first class on a standard ticket

I am not convinced that the plane vs. train argument is valid in this case. Longhaul First and Business Class plane seats are designed for journeys taking between six and twenty hours, often involving significant changes in time zones and overnight travel. The ability to sleep is paramount and...

What if rail travel was charged strictly by the mile.

My main concern about such a system would be that it would not enable operators to effectively discriminate between passengers with higher and lower willingness to pay.

Do FGW ever collect Weekend 1ST on commuter services?

Got it - like a pilot deadheading! :)

Why Are We Always In A Hurry?

I am not a supporter of spending vast sums to save marginal amounts of time. It is perfectly easy to be productive on the train and I see plenty of business travellers working. Anybody can get Advance tickets ... they are available up to 6pm the day before and in my experience are usually in...

Travelling first class on a standard ticket

This is extremely rare. I have only seen it happen a few (i.e. two or three) times in sixteen years of travelling on the route. On each occasion the conductor announced that all rail staff travellers should relinquish their seats. It seems to happen when there is a cancellation of a nearby...

Do FGW ever collect Weekend 1ST on commuter services?

If the trains are DOO then I have one further mystery... I have seen a FGW member of staff get into the rear drivers car. I assumed that this was the ticket inspector and that he would be coming through the train. But he did not! You don't get a cup of tea or anything at all. Just an empty...

Do FGW ever collect Weekend 1ST on commuter services?

This year I have taken FGW services from Paddington to Maidenhead at the weekend quite a few times. I know from experience that the STD compartment can get full but 1ST is much quieter so I travel in 1ST. The most economical option for 1ST is to buy a GBP 10.90 STD Off-Peak Day Return and pay...

Travelling first class on a standard ticket

I agree. I shall be taking a Peterborough to Oakham sector next Saturday and the scheduled travel time is 29 minutes. A STD off peak day single comes in at GBP 11.40 and anytime GBP 15.80. 1ST on the other hand is priced at GBP 33.50, more than double the STD anytime and nearly three times...

East Coast Rewards scheme after February 2015

Way back in the GNER days there was GNER Time. I don't recall any similar scheme with NXEC though. To qualify for Time you needed to send in GBP 1,200 worth of used coupons burned over a three month period. In return you received a booklet of vouchers offering 6x return 1ST travel for up to...

    GNER Mk4 1ST interior pics

Does anybody have any links to images of GNER's Mk4 1ST class compartments with the grey and chrome ICS. Google does not yield any meaningful results. Many thanks in advance. :)

Internet Ticketing Sites TOC's are best ?

I almost always use the East Coast booking engine irrespective of the TOC as I find it easy to use and reliable. No idea why people would use sheepline and pay the associated fees. However I do note that sometime fares are only available through a specific TOC's site. Southern definitely has...
