lostwin - BR in the mid 80's

Have you had to deskew any so the verticals are vertical. What do you use to do that. I use the photo editor that came with Windows 10. But I am editing scans of old documents, not photos.

@RELL6L The Clitheroe - Settle bus goes on to horton in Ribblesdale. But there are some extended breaks in Settle 581 Settle - Kirkby Lonsdale. Actually the 580/581/81 all the way from Skipton to Lancaster isnt bad. Keighley Bus 57 from Bradford to Kly over the tops. 75 skipton - Malham-Settle...

How fast could trains realistically run in the UK?

Why is 125 the max speed for a line with no in cab signalling? Why not 130? Is it just because BR specified HST as a 125 mph train and thats been cast in stone? Has any one done a cost benefit analysis of the small speed increase?

    Not exceeding 40 shillings

The ridges round the edges of higher value coins, called milling, was to stop clipping. You could see if the coin had been clipped. Coins of 5p and above still have a milled edge today. And sovreigns and half sovreigns.

    Covered Bus Stations

United was huge. There were United stage carriage buses in Leeds, albeit on joint services, and in Carlisle and Berwick. Even Edinburgh. But was it bigger than Ribble?

Introduction of Mark 2 air conditioned stock

We havent explored whick Mk2s were Vacuum braked, air braked or dual fitted. And were they all fitted for Electric Train Heating, or were there any early ones that had steam or dual heat? Was there any steam haulage of Mk2's

Driving well below the speed limit

While there are some windy single track roads, some are straight with good visibility. Some should be 30 while other should remain at 60. There is a road near me that is well laid out with a centre white line. But in 2 places there is a narrow bridge and the centre line has a gap. Should just...

Introduction of Mark 2 air conditioned stock

Mk 1's had opening windows that split in the middle, but Mk2's had one big sliding window with a catch at one end. . Not sure if that was all Mk 2's. There was a line on the sign above the windows with max opening if you wanted to avoid draughts. Dont know if that was Mk1, Mk2 or both. Was...

    Covered Bus Stations

The buses went through the garage to get to the bus stand. But when 2 buses were departing at the same time I think one would load inside the garage Wasnt the bus station in 'On the Buses' a dual use building, bus station and garage. But I think the interior shots were a set.

    Not exceeding 40 shillings

Maybe 40/- was a general thing and not just railways. A village in Ribblesdale has a sign listing byelaws for the village green. Taking wheeled vehicles on the green is still a 40/- fine. (Unless the sign is not legal still)

    Covered Bus Stations

Worcester. Its under a shopping centre. Some stops outside with bus shelters, but mostly under cover. the old Cheltenham coach station was largely under cover. Many 'through' express services needed a change there, so a busy place.

Trivia: Strange things seen from trains.

On Skipton station around dusk. A posse of railwaymen were looking over the main station roof. Thinking they were looking at a structural problem and they said look, and pointed. There was a cloud of starlings doing that swirly cloud thing. A murmaration I think its called. I thought that was a...

Introduction of mk 3 stock on WCML

Also on an HST the brake hoses were pressurised/de-pressurised from both power cars, to the brakes were more reactive. I assume the drivers brake control movements were sent down the train wires to the rear power car, which then adjusted the brake pipe pressure. I think thats right.

Introduction of mk 3 stock on WCML

Mk3 catering cars must have taken a fair bit of ETH output. No probs with a cl 86 or 87 but surely a cl47 would struggle. Loco hauled Mk 3's has motor alternator (MA) sets to convert the ETH power to the leccy needed by the Mk3 lighting, aircon and catering equipment. Later these were replaced...

Introduction of Mark 2 air conditioned stock

Youe 'as new' reminded me about some retrofitted with a counter installed at one end. The toilet became a pantry. A catering trolley was brought onto the train and that became part of the counter with the stock ready to sell. It was a modular catering trolley but i think modular catering would...
