First West Yorkshire & York discussion

Thabks for claifying the breakup of WYRCC. Your point about the Wharfedale and Airedale lines improvements is right Tough luck on those who needed to travel from stops some way from the stations, tho.

First West Yorkshire & York discussion

Its a very poor comparison to the 36 to Harrogate/Ripon. Nice new buses and a decent frequency. Pity Blazefield sold some of their core territory to Yprkshire Rider IMHO 1755454995 Otley needs 2 Leeds-Otley routes. Via Bramhope, and also via Guiseley or populated areas would be left busless...

Longest sleeper train rake and shortest rake

The Barow sleepers took seated passengers. The timetable doesnt say sleeping cars only so I assume had seating cars all the way Barrow to Euston. The bit from Preston to Barrow would have extnded the local service day economicaly. This from 1978

First West Yorkshire & York discussion

Ilkley - Skipton was core West yorkshire Road Car territory. Used to be Skipton-Tadcaster, then an extension of the Leeds - Ilkley 34 When WYRCC sold part of their business it became a First route, X84 During Covid, First withdrew from the Ilkley-Skipton section. Transdev took it over, and gave...

    Keighley bus museum

Looks like this nice museum needs our help. The building net door suffered a major fire recently. I think there is damage to the museum roof. I dont believe any buses suffered any damage though. So if you are looking for something to do on 31st August, please go along and support. Image is...

Diesel and electrics been behind? And favourite loco’s?

Cl 73. Great ride behind one in the 1980's on a London Deal overnight vans that had a half brake at the front. It was a damp night so lots of sparking which was nice. Cl 37. Replacing a cl 155 which had a random door opening fault. It was late and the driver had a grudge. Nice loud thrash from...

Introduction of Mark 2 air conditioned stock

BBC had half a Mk 1 compartment. It features in quite a few BBC programs of that era. The Porridge sequence had a 'peak' leaving St Pancras to the sound of a contempoary DMU.

Why was the Gatwick Express originally a part of Inter-City?

Wasnt there a problem with the motor alternator sets in the Mk2's as the ETH supply from the 73 was turned on and off by the loco going over gaps. Having the diesel on meant the ETH supply eas constant. But could 73's use 3rd rail supplemented by diesel to power the train (traction and ETH)...

Why was the Gatwick Express originally a part of Inter-City?

The Gatwick Express services were operated by class 488 and 489 with a class 73 The 488's were aircon Mk2 coaches in 2 and 3 car sets. Normally train contained a 2 and a 3 car set Additionally there was a class 489, a converted driving motor from a 2-HAP. They stayed as driving motors and...

Longest sleeper train rake and shortest rake

There was a Leeds sleeper that sat in one of the west bays each day. HST killed that off. Did any sleepers have Motorail vans attached? I know they were on West Coast trains after Crewe-Glasgow electrification but I think only day trains.

    Sunday services, summer services.

To me Northern have the Settle - Carlisle sunday service wrong. Its a peak day for tourism in the railway catchment area, and there are special Sunday DalesBus services running. Sundays should be regarded as a peak day. And with early starts for those who want to be out on the hills for a long...

    1871 Census

One other thing about census data and inaccuraces in it. The enumerators were clerks from workhouse unions and when not doing censuses, would be administering poor relief. A lot of workkhouse refeif was 'outdoor relief' which was cash payments to keep paupers at home rather than the workhouse...

    1871 Census

Hmmm. Did pimp have another meaning to what it means now? Or is it a case of a bored enumerator guessing at the word spoken in a local accent? Pimp is Welsh for 5, however.

Introduction of Mark 2 air conditioned stock

Was there much difference in the ETH index of a ptessure ventilated Mk2 and an aircon Mk2. Remember, steam heat came from a boiler but ETH eas typically an extra alternator attached to the same output shaft as the alternator for traction. So a higher ETH load would reduce locomotive traction...
